I guess it is the sign of tough economic times and drying out of sponsor money. I just checked and only 69 people flying out of Moscow and making up the Russian team this time(including coaches and team reps). Roman is skipping the europeans to be in top shape for Engin/Neil huge PR event. This could be the reason for some other big names not taking part at the europeans.
I am proud that 6 of my students made the team this year. Some of NY/New England crowd had a chance to pull Aleksander Kovalchuck 3 years ago. He is back. Stronger and faster this time. He placed second to Roman at the last Russian nationals at 154lb. With Roman being out, I have high hope to Alexander to dominate in Bulgaria. I am also bringing a russian champ in 60kg disabled category, and 60 kg junior world champ as well as a couple of fresh junior faces all of whom have good chances of medalling. Hopefully I can bring a medal back myself in the grand-masters category.
I wish everyone good luck and see you in Sofia in two days.
