MY FAMILY WAS VERY COMPETIVE, THEY ARMWRESTLED ALL THE TIME. MY DAD WAS THE STRONGEST AND UNBEATABLE TOO. HAD MASSIVE FOREARMS DUE TO HARD WORK AND MECHANIC WORK. NEVER DID A WRIST CURL EVER. ANYWAYS, WITH THAT SAID OVER THE TOP BECAME CRAZY AT MY SCHOOL, I WENT TO SEE THE MOVIE LIKE 5 TIMES. IN THE SCHOOL WE HAD RANKINGS....OF COURSE ALL RIGHT HAND...AT 175PDS I RANKED 4TH IN THE SCHOOL...INCLUDING THE FOOTBALL JOCKS AND POWER LIFTERS. THAT REALLY SET ME INTO THE SPORT FOR THE DECADE OR SO. (ON THE JOB & AT HOME ON COUNTERS AND 50 GALLON BARRELS) AFTER A BAD CAR WRECK IN 97..I QUIT FOR A LONG TIME...(FRACTURED WRISTS)(TOOK UP CHESS)UNTIL THOSE MAGICAL ESPN SHOWS STARTED UP....RON BATH--TRAVIS BAGENT WERE INSTANT LEGENDS IN MY AREA HERE....NEVER SEEN A "REAL" TOURNAMENT UNTIL THE ESPN SHOWS. "OVER THE TOP" MOVIE WAS THE CLOSEST AT THE TIME. MY HISTORY. T/K

Hell yeah! Over the Top was my Vision Quest or Top Gun. I wanted to find that kid with the fingerless gloves (pinball machine match) and slap his punk ass.
Dave Patton was legend in the bar where we all armwrestled. When he came to tournaments in our area it was like having Elvis show up to do a concert at your school.

A guy I knew at school always seen me AWing. I usually won, some of the big guys gave me hell but I was only 157lbs. This guy told me him and his uncle go to tournaments, so I said sure. I THOUGHT there's NO WAY IN HELL someone who weighs the same as me can be as strong......I was hooked from that day on(not literally because you know I don't hook outside of practice)

Snook, if I had your sidepressure I'd be hooking all day long! I'm gun shy outside of practice with hooking I guess I got the "if its not broke why fix it" thing going on. When I hit into a hook I feel good, way better than if I get turned in from TR. One of these days...

my friends all knew that I liked to armwrestle. I used to armwrestle at lunch time from a very young age. probrably around 3rd grade. No one would be able to beat me. Then the bigger guys a few grades higher would try and I would beat them also. This went on all through school. In 1997 some local guys put on a small tournament and some of my friends twisted my arm and made me go to it. Thats where I met Scott Latella and Benji Dwyer. I actually won the tournament and that was when Scott and Benji told me about a tournament in Albany. I was pumped and so I decided to go to it. I took second place, beating Rob Hill , but loosing to the toproll and speed of a guy named Bogart. I never got another wack at him after that....(Bogart). But that is when I became truely aware of the sport and the technique involved. I have loved it eversince. Thanks Scott and Benji for coming out to the Mowhawk Valley for a small tournament..

I used to powerlift, entered the Iron City tourney (Jim Gentile ran it) in Butler PA, got my butt handed to me, forgot about AW for a long time. I was training for strongman contests and didn't want to go outside in winter to pick up a frozen stone or tire so I looked for an indoor strength sport. Bought a Frank Hirst table and started pulling and running tourneys

I always beat everyone in a local bar (it was 1991), until the bar man said: do you think you are the strongest in the bar right now? I looked around and said yes ofcourse. After that a little guy stepped foreward and challanged me. We armrestled and i lost! It was Jock mc Kay from Scotland (old european champion) and we started training together and i was addicted for the rest of my life!

Mostly the playground at school story for me, beating all of the older kids except one. I guess I forgot about it for a while but still had an axe to grind. I looked it up on the internet sometime in early college and found armwrestling.com for info. I watched some free ArmTV videos, and the one that stood out most was Bagent's "Cult of Personality" clip. That just motivates!
After trying newly learned techniques on people in bars, friends, etc. and having good results, I tried Montana State in Billings, whacked my nose, went to the straps for the 1st time, and ended up 1-2....I was hooked. Big thanks to Leonard & Co for all the help along the way!
