Every once in a while, I receive a request from a puller to have his name removed from the In the Hook rankings. When the request is due to a puller taking time away from the sport for personal reasons or because of injury, and he has no plans to return to the sport in the near future, I oblige and remove him. However, I don’t like to remove a puller from the rankings simply because he doesn’t want to be ranked. Excluding an active puller from the rankings dilutes the overall list quality, and it can appear as though I am purposefully keeping someone off. I feel it reflects badly on me.
Although the In the Hook rankings aren’t perfect, I take pride in them. I can’t think of any other sport where a top athlete can simply ask to be removed from rankings. Would the World Golf Rankings exclude Phil Mickelson if he said he didn’t want to be on the list?
How do you think I should handle these types of requests?

I voted 'No'.
You must consider ALL active pullers if you want the most respected list.
You start dropping names because of personal issues and it will certainly lessen the accuracy of the rankings.

I vote no.. How can you not be subject to ranking if you are actively competing. Its based on wins and losses and nothing else.

I voted "yes'. The ranking for arm wrestling are all done on someones opinion. In golf it is done by a system. I won't debate this. It is just my opinion.

Mr Sears,Please do not take exception to this. The rankings are here for all of us to view, in order to evaluate the type of competition in our respective area's.To take your name off would not be in the best interest of the sport. If you want to take your name off then take away your ranking as well. Then it would be no harm/no foul. This has nothing to do with making someone do something against their will. This ranking system is a collective of all our accomplishments. We might end up with two ranked opponents in a class with twenty still out there ready to pull and the promoter does not know who is available in each class. The system would fail miserably I believe (jmo)

Why would someone NOT want ranked in the first place?
If you don't want the attention, why even pull?

With the way organized armwrestling is right now I don't think it's possible to develop a system that can achieve what I think rankings should depict. Unlike larger sports like golf, tennis, auto racing, etc., there is no set circuit tour of events that the majority of competitors attend throughout the year. For this reason, any points system won't work perfectly for armwrestling rankings. To compensate, I sometimes have to make judgment calls. The In the Hook rankings are not "official" rankings for the sport of armwrestling. They may be more known than other rankings because I've been doing them for a number of years, but they shouldn't be taken as gospel. If I rank someone fifth in a class, it means that based on results I've seen, I think the puller is approximately the fifth best in the class right now. Anyone is free to agree or disagree. The rankings exist to highlight the accomplishments of the sport's top pullers. I would hope that most pullers would want to be ranked.
I'm unsure of the exact reasons why someone wouldn't want to be ranked, but I suppose it's because they either don't agree with their ranking, or they don't like the pressure they may feel that the ranking places on them. You can't really hide when you attend an event and you're listed as being one of the best.

If someone wants off the list then either don't pull or don't win, that should do it.

Sorry Eric, I did not think that removing me would cause such a stir.
You see guys. I told Eric I was pulling back in the 154's for Nationals this year and he wanted to Rank me #1 Right handed. and # 3 Left handed I told him not to put me on the rankings.

He should leave you where you are in the higher weight class, until you actually pull the 54's, and like Justin said, earn the spot by beating them.
