Allen, I am very impressed you have quit for so long. I have tried and failed more than a few times. ... John, I tried and tried for years to stop and never had the will power to do so. Not only was it wreaking havoc on my wallet, but my health as well. My Grandfather died from it after many years of chewing and the cancer went up through his top palette and started to eat on his brain. Before it was said and done he had lost most of his nasal cavity, completely lost his left eye, and brain damage way beyond recovery. His death was slow and painful from what my mother told me ( I was two years old) Of course being a kid and thinking I was bullet-proof, I disregarded what had happened to him and started dipping due to peer pressure. Before I knew it I was addicte to it. Twenty years later reality was setting in that if I wanted to watch my children grow and watch my grandchildren grow...I needed to stop immediately! I started using the gum (highly recommend to chew ONE piece until your jaws hurt to the point of not being able to hold your mouth shut) and never picked it back up because if I completed 1 day I can complete 2 days, so on and so forth. You know what...it is like an alcoholic or drug addict taking it one day at a time. The urge is always there to pick it back up, and so are the consequences.

Any kind of tobacco is nasty. I have tried it to see what the big deal is. The nicotine makes me sick. Chewing tobacco is pretty good as long as i keep moving like yard work and stuff. If I sat in a car chewing I would get sick. The only snuff I ever liked was hawken that I could chew but it does nothing for me other than making my teeth black and costing money. I never understood how anyone could get addicted to any form of tobacco. It's been about 8 years since i tried any of it though.

Of course being a kid and thinking I was bullet-proof, You mean, you're not?? Good choice to quit, Allen! Peer pressure can be a bi*ch when you're a kid.. Funny what matters to us at that age...

I tried it twice both time rediculous peer pressure, especially baseball, but both times I ended up puking like a champ, I remember once at the lake cat fishing, and you could hear the bull frogs all over the lake responding to me after I was done, my friends still love to tell that story.

Isn't it funny what's acceptable though. As a kid, if you had smoked a cigarette your parents would probably have killed you but dipping or chewing was ok. Or at least it was at my house. My dad quit smoking cigarettes when I was 2 years old but started smoking cigars when I was a teenager. Talk about disgusting! I worked downtown Houston one summer and rode to and from work with him. He'd smoke the cigars in the car and I'd be sick by the time I got to work. Of course my mother went crazy when he walked in the door in the evening and you could smell him. He never smoke at home though or around my mother. If I had been caught smoking cigarettes, both parents would have killed me. Guaranteed. It was major taboo in our house. I snuck and smoked, my sister never touched the cigs. Both of my brothers came along and it was completely acceptable to my dad for them to dip. My mother would pitch a fit and he'd say "that's just baseball players candy, honey". Even though both can kill you with cancer smoking was a no no but dipping was great! Go figure. I smoked 31 years - have quit for 6 now. Like Allen, I gained weight - a TON of it. My youngest brother quit dipping but took up smoking. Now figure this one - he quit smoking cigarettes but will smoke a cigar every night after dinner. But - he says he doesn't smoke! Like one of our President's - he doesn't inhale so he figures it doesn't count

I was a heavy smoker for years. I smoked as a all american wrestler, as I competed in MMA. I even took a smoke break at a open mat try out at a Div 1 school. Now I'm not talking about light smoking, I'm talking about full on 1 1/2- 2 packs a day type habit that started when I was a early teenager. Even with going away for wrestling camps, nationals and all of that I never hid it a bit. I quit 4 years ago when my body started to fall apart and I was sick all of the time. I stated back up 2 years ago, but I quit again and I can say that I will never smoke again. Chewing is fun, but its not that oral fixation that I got from smoking.

Chewing is definately a social thing for most, for me its a way of life i chew about two tins a week or a bag depending on what i chew that week.....I have to admitt sometimes when i put in a fat lipper (quarter tin or more in one pinch) the head rush i get is some what similar to that of the one i get after throwin back double crown and cokes all night then make the mistake of just jumping into bed...u know that rush of euphoria than is immediatley followed by sthingying with the porcelain prince...
