I'm going to be holding a tournament here at Vermont Tech to promote Arm-Wrestling. I was wondering what people think the weight divisions should be for both men and women.

Tony that depends on what kind of presence you think you will get, do a lot of people at your college already armwrestle, or are you mostly going to be pulling in the average strong guy?
If you do not have too many real armwrestlers in your college, and this continues to stump you, one thing you can do is decide how many classes you want to have and just call them lightweight, middle weight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight depending on how many classes you want, or just say there will be 4 or 5 different weight classes when you are trying to promote it, then after people weigh in and you are making the brackets, group the pullers close in weight together, I have done this a few times at odd events of mostly non armwrestlers.

It's going to be an event of no more than 10 experienced Arm-Wrestlers.

i would do the normal classes and see what you get for a turn out. if you need to change them later, that wuld be ok.

Tony if you think you are going to get a fair amount of diverse people, mostly non armwrestlers, and you really need to set classes in advance, 154, 176, 198 and over should be sufficient. They are real classes easily explained as being 70 80 90 and over in kilos, they cover the gambit and should cover the average group of people your age.
On the other hand you could set the classes to fit the 10 guys that are real pullers (within reason) so that there is a couple in each class, then let the rest of the student body just fill in.

You don't need to be affiliated with an organization. Since there will be inexperienced armwrestlers competing, you might want to look into insurance ( unless the school covers ). Because sometimes, not always, beginner arms may break.
I'm sure Leonard can help you in this matter.

Very good point Christian, I would at least make sure you have a very well written waiver form and make sure you get one signed from everyone, hold on to it dearly.
Who ever is running the table needs to be very clear upfront about stopping matches in dangerous positions, don't waste time telling them to get out of the position during the match, tell them in advance if they get there you are going to stop it, then physically step in, take control and stop the match.

If I ask the questions I would need to, in order to help you... the wonderful ladies on this board may get mad at me. Women are really tough, because you are asking them to get pinned into a set of weights, again it might be better to say 3 classes for women then let the turn out decide what classes. But, if that will not work, 143, 176, Open?

Hi Tony. There is a poll about weight classes on the IAF events page. Check it out from time to time to see what is everyone's favorite. iaf1.homestead.com/events.html
