Well I know about how much it cost to make fliers I used to work at Staples. The other stuff Im not really informed on the details. My main question was why is there one when there isn't at pretty much all the other tournaments? Ray Jenkins tournament was at a fair. An Rick didn't charge one for his Galloways tournament.
An Karen Rick told me on the phone that there wouldn't be any money given off for multiple entries. I paid $20 for both. Well really 25 for open an 20 for the novice if you count the admission fee which was waived off of my entry fees. My big thing about this is I guess. Why don't we simply hold it somewheres else so we dont' have to charge spectators? I would like to see NC have a HUGE tournament. With money offered. Im sure there could be some places that would hold a tournament besides just a bar that would sponsor. How about some of the nutrition stores like GNC an such? I just want more tournaments in the Carolinas. Not really complaining I like Get-A-Grip although it was kinda boring this year cause hardly anyone showed up compared to the tournaments I have been to in the past.

One of the few chances I can drive to a tournament that morning an come home that evening. Ya'll just have a curious person on ya'lls hands. Why not hold the adult tournament at a different time than the kid tournament? Say hold a kid tournament for just kids at a completely different time of the year. Wouldn't that solve the sponsor problem?

Or have a tournament without the kids and have it in a bar. They will give out the money.
Where was this Galloways tournament held? Maybe that would be a good place to keep going to.

Travis charges 5 bucks to get into HIS place and don't give out a damn dime... or even trophies! lol
He did however pay me for the two supermatches I had there last year...

Well I wouldn't pay $5 to see Travis, but I would pay to see some of the TALENT he brings through there.
There Karen, I said Talent instead of SUPERSTARS.
You happy now?

Rick, would you ever consider a different venue for Get a Grip? You're looking for a family friendly facility and it would be nice if the place would throw you a few bucks for the event, but I'd imagine the options are limited in Albemarle. Would you ever consider looking around Charlotte for a venue that might be a bit more friendly to your wallet? I'm guessing any form of sports bar/restaurant would be out, but I'm sure there are other venues that would work well. If you'd like me to check around I'd be more than happy to.

Some possibilities...
Fuddruckers Damon's YMCA, Planet Fitness, Peak Fitness, etc Charlotte Convention Center US National Whitewater Rafting Center (out-of-towners would get a kick out of this one) Jillians Lowe's Motor Speedway Cricket Arena Founders Hall (Bank of America) Wachovia Atrium Field of Steel (Harley Davidson festival in Lake Norman...they currently have some dinky armwrestling tournament as part of the festival. You could make it a REAL tourney)
I'm just brainstorming here. Many of these would probably cost a lot of money, but some might be surprisingly inviting.

Erick, I would be interested if they paid a pretty good amount. I do get some sponsorship (Usually around $1000) but it comes from all local businesses that my bodyshop does business with. I have thought about this at great length. I have considered having a Nationals but it would need to be in Charlotte, Raleigh or Greensboro to have good access to an airport. I couldn't ask for the $1000 that I get now and then take the tournament elsewhere. If I could get the $1000 or more and not have to pay for a venue then I would be very interested. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'll definitely check in to some things for you. Would you want the tourney to remain in the winter months or would that be flexible also?

Here's a thought, put someone at the door who will collect the entry fee!!Your guilt trip isn't ever going to put money in your pocket. I don't care what type of venue your having people will try and get in free.

Charlotte would be a good place. Don't some sports bars allow kids? That would be awesome to host a nationals.

Honestly, I think Jillians would be a great fit. It's a restaurant and arcade, even though there is a small bar inside as well. After the kids get done with their armwrestling they could enjoy themselves playing arcade games while we all finish out the tournament.

You know we were just sitting around last night talking about the Get A Grip. You know, it's amazing to just sit there and watch how many people just "Walked By" the man/kid that was working the door. This year I put a sign on the front entrance to the building that said Admission Fee - $5 Armwrestlers - This will be taken off your entry fee. There was another large dry erase board that you had to walk right by to get to the man/kid working the door that said in LARGE WRITING, the same thing. Then of course you have the man/kid working the door standing there holding a "PAID" stamp with a "MONEY BOX" on the table. All off this would tend to let a person know that there was indeed an admission fee. I personally saw almost a dozen people just walk right by. Many of who did not pull and did not help with the event. I saw one just put his head back and walk in like he had no intention of paying. Many of these were people that I know very well. I didn't say a word. I now know that these people are willing to cheat/steal/lie, whatever you want to call it over $5. I would hate to think that I would lose my reputation over $5. Then again, if everybody already knows that you are a dirt bag that you don't have anything to lose do you? BTW, this post is not intended towards anyone who may have ACCIDENTALLY forgotten to pay or who came in when we may not have had someone working the door or later on after we stopped charging. This is for those who INTENTIONALLY came in and did not pay. You know who you are. If you didn't get a stamp on your hand when you came in, then you didn't pay. I walked by a couple of you several times just to make sure that I was correct. No stamp, didn't pull in the tournament, didn't pay. Team NC and the Get A Grip will be fine. I just wanted to let you know that you didn't get by with it. Charging at the door gives value to the show. Now some of you may disagree with that but nothing is for free. Those of you that complained about paying full price for each entry.......question for you. When you entered that second class was the awards smaller? or the cost of the event different for any entry? Did you see the page about the cost of the awards? Promoting is a very risky business and charging at the door is standard for events that have a ball room or is rented. Rick you need someone at the door who is more assertive and you need to set it up so no one can just slip in. We do it all the time and we do not get anyone just slipping in or "gate crashing". Anyway after you promote your own events you will have your eyes opened on what crazy amount of time and effort, not to mention your own money, it takes.

Very well said Leonard...........The people who gripe or say you should do this or you should do that have never stuck their neck out there and ran a tournament There is alot involved and even with sponsorship money it usually does not cover all costs...not even close!! Directors put in alot of unpaid time leading up to a tourney for promoting, planning..etc! $5 is nothing to pay to view a sporting event and saying it is too much for spectators belittles the sport itself...people should have to pay to watch us compete

Mark, I agree. We did have someone at the door. I personally saw quite a few walk by him and I'm sure there were a lot that I didn't see. I wasn't saying it to get someone to send me any money. I was just making the point that there are a lot of people out there who would steal all your prize money if they knew that they wouldn't get caught. I could have said something to them myself but I didn't want to start any trouble. $5 just isn't worth it to me. Just wanted them to know that I KNOW THEY DIDN"T PAY. Maybe next year I'll set up a hidden camera and get Gary to put it on ARM TV. Then everyone can see who didn't pay. That would be cool wouldn't it. Later.
