I was just wondering what people thought about Pit bulldogs?................I have 5 and they are the greatest pets you could ask for.................as far as my kids they love them and the dogs love them back..they climb on their backs and roll around and play with them every chance they get...........................But these dogs have a bad reputation as being killers and very aggressive a dog is only as mean as you raise it to be..............I was raised around Pits all my life my Daddy raised and breeded them we have had up to 40-45 head at one time and never did we have one growl or even think about biting...............thats just the way I feel about them.........What about you?

a dog is only as mean as you raise it to be... Exactly........ Rotweiler's have gotten a bad rep also and my friend had 3 of them and all 3 were very gentle.

In WWll a pitbull dragged a german spy by itself into custody and was promoted to Sergeant. The highest ranking ever acheived by a dog to this day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sergeant. I have two pitbulls, a Male, tan & white and a Female Brindle.

they are good dogs, but when they do attack they do alot of damage.. Cocker spaniels bite more than any other dog, but they dont do as much damage as a pit, or rott, Omaha is going through a big ordeal now over them., one attacked a 2 year old and almost killed the kid.. We have laws for them , like you have to be a certain age and have permits ,

Dogs "wig out" just like people do sometimes. Pit bulls are stronger/nastier than the average dog. You would never see one around my kid.

Actually guys pits are some of the most people friendly dog. A "game" dog if ya'll know what that is, anyways if it's a Good bred game dog it is bred to NEVER bite a human just another dog an that has been bred into most of the pit bloodline which really has alot of Staffordshire terrier in it's genetic makeup. A pit isn't a true pureblood dog. They are usually 99.9% Staffordshire terrier. It's backyard breeders that have messed up the colby bloodline. An just so everyone knows a rednose, gator mouth, blue, brindle, blah blah etc..... That is just describing a characteristic of the dog there is no such thing as a type of pit. It's either a pitbull or a pit mix. A blue pit is simply a grey colored PITBULL Terrier. But anyways pits are some of the most people friendly dog an 9 times out of 10 the dog that supposedly was a pit that mawed a kid or something was really just a regular ole bulldog. An the media wants it to sound more interesting an brutal so they say it was a pitbull. Seriously ask some of the papers sometimes next time you see that an they will tell you they have no evidence it was truly a Pitbull. Im in an area where Pits are bred to be "game". Anyways I love the dogs. One of the best people dogs you can have. Any big dog can do damage to a kid. Another myth about pits is the lockjaw. They don't lock their jaws nor do they have a different set of jaws than any other dog they just have a completely different mentality when it comes to fighting other dogs because of the way they were bred. They don't "lock" their jaws in the loose sense of that word they just simply don't let go. Like a lion or tiger does their prey. Also those Huge bully dogs that weigh like 100lbs are not true pits a true purebred colby pit would only weight between 30-50lbs.

Dogs "wig out" just like people do sometimes. Pit bulls are stronger/nastier than the average dog. You would never see one around my kid. I have seen good ones and bad but I agree, they make me nervous around small kids. There may only be a 1 in 1000 chance that the dog may try to exert its dominance over the child but why not let the kids play with a loaded gun? Even if it's a revolver with only one round in it... it's still a gun. A pitbull is still a pitbull. Actually I heard that German Shepherds have been known to just "snap" more than pitbulls? www.petsdo.com/blog/top-ten-10-most-dangerous-dog-breeds I remember a Chow Chow named Madamme, when I was growing up. Man was she mean!

pitbulls are a breed mixed of bulldog and terrier,, yes there are alot of dogs that look similar, but not all are actual pitbulls, alot of terriers ages ago were very aggressive dogs, by selective breeding, breeders were able to tone down the aggressiveness of the animals
as with any dog, it is going to act how it is raised.. a dog that attacks people is usually traned or groomed to do so.. then there are others that are friendly..
No matter what dog it is , leaving it with a child is not a great idea. animals play hard.. little kids dont fare so well to this kind of playfullness

Mat that is so not true about pitbulls just snapping. Thats why the dogs have such a bad rep because of all the myths. Just like the myth about Doberman's brains swelling making them go crazy.

I have an American Bulldog. She is very smart. Her name is Pearl because she is white. Yes she sleeps between my wife and I at night just like family would. She is very clean besides being smart. Sometimes a little too smart but that is what you get with Children. I was not going to do it again after my last two but Heather talked me into it. I am glad she did. My only stipulation was I got to pic but when we found her in Brewton Alabama there was no question she would be with us. She did not even bark for several months . She still will not bark at another dog however if she gets close enough and they look down their nose she will eat them. She does love people though but obeys at least in front of company. I run with her during part of my weekly cardio. Sometimes 3 miles. I have had numerous people see her with me in public and all were immediatley attracted to her. She is maybe a little over two possibly three now.

I believe dogs "snap" but it has to do wit the stress and enviroment they are in , just like a person that comes out of nowhere and kills people or beats their family..

Yes that is true, but a true gamebred pit is made to handle stress very very well an not bite the owner when he grabs them an pulls them out of the pit.

I had trained Am Staffs for years because of being a breeder and have NEVER been bitten by any of my dogs. It was actually part of their training that I did with them. I would do a lot of rope hanging with them. Where you get them to lock their jaw on a rope hanging from a tree and let them stay there. I would sometimes soak the rope in meat juice and get them to lock out on the rope and hang and I would then stick my hand in their mouths to teach them to release with this prompt and I was NEVER BITTEN.
Very dangerous thing to do but if you love and trust your dog, they will know it and will never harm you or anyone else around you.

Good point Pete .......people are gonna have different opinions about these dogs but in the end it is all in how you raise them ......if you raise them to attack then they will!
