Italian Cruise Ship Fires on Pirates
By NICOLE WINFIELD, AP posted: 1 HOUR 33 MINUTES AGOcomments: 1776filed under: Pirates News, World NewsPrintShareText SizeAAANAIROBI, Kenya
(April 26) - The small white skiff approached the Italian cruise ship Melody after dinnertime as it sailed north of the Seychelles, the pirates firing wildly toward the 1,500 passengers and crew on board. What the pirates didn't expect was that, in the darkness, the crew would fire back.

Rock on. Absolutely right. Thugs understand power. You cannot negotiate with an eighteen year old imbecile who is f*****D up on Khat and toting an AK-47. He's not there to negotiate and is too high to care. These pirates are goons working for crime syndicates. The decision makers are in Mogadishu selling the Khat and furnishing the AKs.
While we're solving problems here, on shore is where the problem is ended with a few SEAL teams and USMC Force Recon. Unlike the prior Mogodishu debacle, the difference is the goal will be to kill people and break thing under a US banner and not go in as a ridiculous police action governed by the dickless UN. I spent time there during the Mogadishu fiasco and that was pure and simple a UN clusterf***k of epic proportions.
The only way to end pirating is to make the pirates' bad prospects outweigh the good. 12 miles out is international waters. Any vessel not identifying itself to all others in visual range and posturing from an oblique target angle should be sunk without warning. You only have to sink two or three before the word gets out and every vessel south of the Suez Canal will fly flags that say "DON'T SHOOT!!"
These asshats are coming alongside in small craft... 350 miles offshore. These morons simply cannot be sailing motorboats for a week from land. There's a mother ship, or several, out there. Sink that tub. Better yet, have said SEAL team take it down and then tow the burning hulk into Somali waters and use it for HARthingy and SM2 target practice. Call every bird out of Djibouti to run airstrikes on it so the dimwits on shore can watch.
Ok. I'm done ranting.

Yeah, you don't want me for President. You think George W was all about kicking some ass...
You know, it's disgusting. 5 dipcraps in a lifeboat held the US Navy at bay for days on end because the handwringing pansies in the White House and State Dept could not find a pair of testicles within 90 nautical miles. Three days later the WH sends out a memo saying the President authorized force twice. Twice? For what? Because the Navy was authorized and didn't want to take action? Is that what we're supposed to believe? He had to tell them again? BS. Coward in the White House is what the memo should have read.
President Wilson's timeline:
1900 GMT: US Commercial skipper taken hostage by foreigners in Red Sea.
1915 GMT: C-130 takes off from Little Creek.
1930 GMT: FLASH comms to COMDESRON LANTFLT "INTERDICT VESSEL. PREPARE TO TAKE ON HELO. SPECWAR ABOARD. SOCOM TO DIRECT."
0600 GMT: Problem solved.
0800 GMT: CNN reports a merchant marine vessel was harassed by pirates, but no reports of any violence. US Navy in area to patrol.

Karen you make VERY good points. Handing civilians with no weapons training military grade weapons(what you would need to stand a chance) is a bad idea. How about hiring a security team to provide security for the ship that has the training? I know cost could be an issue. But would it not be cheaper to pay a security team to protect your ship, than pay millions in lost cargo, the ship, ransom, or more importantly people ?(those working the ship, the pirates getting whacked would be good IMO)

Exactly right. The merchant ships don't need to be fighting pirates. THey need to keep the world's economy moving by delivering their goods. That's what we need them focused on. The role of the government is to protect its own commerce. Every US flagged ship exiting Port Suez (the south end of the Suez Canal), exiting the Gulf of Oman, and approaching the Ethiopian border from the south - should take on a USMC squad by helicopter and then they will be helo-extracted when the ship exits the hot zone. Been there, done that. The helo does not even have to land. Our boys are pros. There are plenty of Marines chomping at the bit to smoke some bad guys. That's what our fine Marines do, and they are plenty good at it. While the Marines are providing seagoing security the Navy should be patrolling the IO and Red Sea sinking all vessels that refuse to identify and deny being boarded. Lest anyone think I'm being John Wayne here, those two things are already required by international maritime law. Pirates, in any corner of the world, are to be sunk. Every thug on the high seas is a bad ass until you level a 5 inch gun on them and put one across the bow. You don't have to speak a common language to know what "DONG! DONG! DONG! DONG! followed by a ginormous gun barrel swinging toward you means.) The ones who still refuse to identify themselves, well you get the idea.

they just really need one good military trained sniper with a Barett 50 cal. IMO I was thinking a browning M2 .50 cal. I think it would be more effective(quicker kills) than one at at time, when they got automatic AK-47's and RPG's firing back. Also the shield on the front would protect the gunner from the ak rounds.

No Anthony I choose the bolt action because why wait till they are within range to even use those weapons, one spotter one shooter ....send it
