The only issue would be sea state. Some days the Red Sea is like a sheet of glass. Other days a single shot would be impossible. Then again, why would it have to be one or the other?
I prefer a stinger. Laser guided missiles are a wonderful thing. The fear factor would set in. Most crazies don't fear being shot because they figure they have an AK, so the odds aren't that bad. Nobody wants to be incinerated from a mile away with zero chance of escape. Even skinnies jacked on Khat understand asymmetric force.
You're right- a single shot from a sniper / spotter team is ultra effective. But what scares you more? A known kill shot that won't hurt, or a dude coming at you with a flame thrower? I'll take the surgical shot, thank you. Lights out, I'm done. A flame thrower isn't realistic, but a stinger missile is. If I'm a pirate I just need to see one boat get hit and chunks of flaming ass spewing across the sea to realize this piratin' bidness ain't for me.

I was thinking a browning M2 .50 cal. I think it would be more effective(quicker kills) than one at at time, when they got automatic AK-47's and RPG's firing back. Also the shield on the front would protect the gunner from the ak rounds. No Anthony I choose the bolt action because why wait till they are within range to even use those weapons, one spotter one shooter ....send it Well I was basing my weapon of choice off of Mrs. Bean's post of: "Take into consideration the lifeboats used now. These things are completely sealed in order to protect the occupants from the elements. So, in order to be able to get to anyone, you have to wait for a hatch to open." Legally you can't just go out Blastin' holes into boats because they MAY have bad guys. It could be up close and personal where an automatic weapon would be the best bet. John I guess they may think they're bad with the AK's, but I think it would be like pissing up a rope on their end. Not completely impossible, but not likely Now the RPG's......

You're right, Snook. But remember who you're talking about. These aren't the world's brightest cookies. They're probably being paid in drugs (khat) and it's either pirating or go back to hanging out in Mogadishu in an aids-infested crack house. (Don't anybody go getting mad at me unless you've been to Somalia and want to tell me I'm wrong.)
The cats running the show are not the pirates. They guys in charge of the scam are warlords in Somalia and probably Ethiopia. Until they're wiped out there will be a never ending supply of drug addicts willing to go be pirates in exhange for khat.
But I still maintain that there are one or several mother ships out there. These ********s are coming alongside freighters *350 miles out* in the commercial shipping lanes. There's a whole lotta blue stuff out there. There is no way possible to float around in a junk and wait for a commercial ship to come by close enough to chase it down. Utterly impossible. Somewhere there is a good size ship that is trolling with radar and listening to a marine band radio waiting for a commercial ship to fall into range and then they are launching the small boats to go ambush them.
Sink the mothership.

Now they do have rounds for the 50 cal sniper rifle designed to penetrate armor then when the round reaches the inside blow up like an explosive.I don't think boats are equipped for that. As for who is good an who is bad with the way things are (Radar, radios, telescopes )there are many ways of identifying hostiles from friendly's,if you do not respond to any such identifyers then you will be treated as hostile IE....your in my way an I don't know ya look out.
