over the course of my armwrestling career i have heard many rumors of Europeans having funding given to them for bringing back Medals from various competitions (worlds, european championships). Is this True? Which countries? How did the armwrestling associations go about getting support?
I will say that in Canada there is no government support for this.

between 1988-1998 there was no support for us as we have spent our own without any prize.after 1998 we became an official sport but we sometimes got paid and sometimes didnt.for example Serhat Arslan who took 2. in 2007 and 2008 Europeans received NO award.for example this year at the Europeans 50 kg women category champion Deniz Coskun received no award.same with the 55-65 and 70kg finishers in top 3..lately it became very hard to receive award from the government as long as you are not an olympic sport athlete.
for example Turkish athletes who won a medal last year at the WAF in Canada received no AWARD.we will be going to Italy with about 20 pullers and 8 of them is sponsored by the federation and the rest goes by their own.
i won World titles before and after became an official sport, didnt start for award but it also happenned time to time.

Its not rumor. Its well known I thought, and very common in European countries as far as I know. Georgia, Uzbekistan, Russia that I know of for sure. Athletics and competition are a matter of national pride and the goverment subsidizes the athletes with funding, room, training, etc. Especially if you are a champion and bring home titles.
