Not really. They should not have waited until the bill. The mgr may have even comp'd their meals.......He said/she said. If you eat with a big party, it's normally added in, it is 'mandatory' if the Restaurant's policy is so. Don't like it, don't eat there. If people have a question about gratuity, what's added in for a big party, ask at the beginning. If you have complaints during the meal, don't wait until you're finished, burp and then bitch.

I side with this philosophy........also, all the trouble they went thru to have the police involved, could have been serving another big party $$$ ............waste time on claiming a meager $16 (when the manager admittingly stated that the service sucked)?, or seat more parties and try to make up for it?

A restaurant throws enough food in the trash at the end of every night that the profit from one meal is insignificant.
Dumbass manager.
A restaurant lives and dies on service. Unless your head chef is Mario Batali and people only eat there once to say they have, you need repeat business to survive. You don't get that by acting like a douche. Welcome to business where sometimes you lose. Suck it up and seat another table. Put on your happy face and make up the lost money on the following orders.

I've left a -$2.00 (yes, negative) tip before. Didn't get one refill, took 20 minutes to get drinks in the first place, an hour an a half to get food, date didn't get silverware, had to get it myself, didn't get complimentary bread, waiter was rude....gratuity for large parties may be required, but if it's not required, I don't believe in leaving a tip if the service was "horrible". A tip relfects on the quality of time you experienced at a restaraunt. Many waiters/waitresses this day in age just take it for granted they are performing a function that truley requires "NO SKILL OR TALENT"....it does require "People Skills"....and If they can't produce that, then screw them, get a new profession or take your $2.35 an hour and go buy some Fritos.

:)Also, I *TIP* the US Gov't every hour I work...most waiters and waitresses that I know "brag" about not having to pay taxes. Now I've had some waiters/waitresses who have provided "OUTSTANDING" service, and I accomodate them appropriately. I truley believe they can make or break an experience at a restaraunt, and even though grautity was required in this scenario, I think it's ridiculous they were arrested when they payed for their food. I've seen this happen before when I used to be a waiter...not caring about a large party because grautuity is required...it shouldn't be mandatory in any situation. I hope this restaruant goes out of business... ;D
