Rapid City SD, the beautiful Black Hills, Mount Rushmore etc... ok guys i have a place in rapid that is very interested in having a tournament and making it a yearly thing. the problem is we cant get anyone to come to these things out here??? we have tried money tournaments in Deadwood, and various other venues ample time to allow you to plan for it and so on. i want to know what it takes to get people here? any legitimate ideas are very welcome. the new place is very nice non smoking Irish pub, drinks, food, nice stage for the competition. i know the first year will be tough but i think if we can grow each year he will put more and more into it. i see the numbers that Ames gets and i think that is fantastic, but if you ask Jeff, who has been to the Hills, he would tell you its great here, this is a destination spot.
so i digress, you tell me, what will it take, money? challenge matches? armtv? what what what!!!!!
thanks in advance for the good ideas.
Luke

For me it's timing. This tournament is 1 week after Fireside Lounge in Iowa, 1 week before toproll, 2 weeks before Pull for the Hungry, and it is about a 9 hour drive for me. Last years pro-am was 1 week after the Harley Pull and both tournaments were nearly 10 hours from me so I had to pick one of them. If there was another pro-am like last year I'd be there quick with a carload of guys (assuming it wasn't the week before or after another big tourney).

I agree, Luke. SD is absolutely beautiful! Once you make a trip up there you will be hooked and the competition in that neck of the woods is top notch!

Luke I would for sure not have it during the winter. I think both times we went up to Deadwood, the whole state of Wyoming was closed down for a period of time. As far as ideas to draw people, I'd say all of the above. Big name challenge matches will always draw people. The money is good, but isn't always a main factor. Look at Pete's tournaments. He has awesome challenge matches, awards, and turnout. I traveled out their twice knowing that it was going cost a lot and I wasn't going to make any money back, but it was WELL worth it both times.

Chris' event was on the eastern side of the state though so you pretty much got the Heartland puller crowd as well as some of us from the mountain region. KC, Omaha, MPLS, aren't that far. But Deadwood is very far from those places.
I agree that winter should be avoided as well. You are mainly going to get wyoming guys and locals and maybe a few pullers from eastern montana and northern colorado.
Money helps but money and lots of advance notice (and flyer mailings) will also make a difference.
