I've recently been interested in researching the top 10 boxing matches of all-time. TIME magazine released their list with "Thrilla in Manilla" as the number one fight of all-time. I think it would be a great addition to any armwrestling website to have a list of the top 10 armwrestling matches of all-time. Can you help me compile them. I'm not sure what the criteria should be, but it definitely needs to include historical importance. (passing the torch or No. 1 ranking)
Matches to consider: John Brzenk winning the Over the Top tournament. Devon Larratt vs. John Brzenk (Arm Wars) Devon Larratt vs. Travis Bagent (Arm Wars) Denis Cyplenkov vs. John Brzenk (PAL Vegas) Alexey Vovoeda vs. John Brzenk (Zloty Tur) Arsen Liliev vs. John Brzenk (Istanbul)
Engin and Eric, your opinions on this would be very valuable.
Another list to compile would be the top 10 most anticipated matches of the year. It could be released in January each year. I can think of several that I've been looking forward to. Chandler vs. Vigeant Jr. right and left (right arm in a hook) Corey Miller vs. Rick Soliwada right and left Luke Kindt vs. Anthony Snook right Angel Cosme vs. Robert Prozivalskis left Eric Wolfe vs. anyone under 200lbs. in a hook.
Who would you put as the best rivalry for 2010? I think Selearis vs. Rakers was pretty good. (Mike Gould,Arnold Classic, UAL) Brent came out on top in 2 of the 3. Too bad there won't be an ROTN to give Mike a chance to even the score.
Another good one is Klema vs. Snook. (NEAC, AAA, Unifieds)

I like Brzenk vs Farid in Vegas. That was a long hard match.

Some of the listed matches were significant in terms of what they represented and/or were highly anticipated, but the matches themselves were not very exciting (lopsided).
Two good matches that quickly come to mind are the first Devon and Ron supermatch in 2006, as well as the match that Tim mentioned between John and Farid (also in 2006).
I would also consider most of the Marcio/Michael Todd matches as being up there as well.

The Ryan C, Scot Fleming match was th best I have seen. I dont travel much and I have only been in the sport 1.5 years but that hurt my arm to watch. I didnt think anyone would say that match but Rob must have seen the video

Cool, it would be nice to have a spot that includes a paragraph of the significance of each match and then include the video. I thought the Taras/Brzenk match featured in Pulling John looked epic in it's presentation. I guess the quality of the match isn't as important as we all know that certain styles can make a match look easy. Most of the great battles feature a flopped wrist competitor vs. a top roller. These are long and hard fought, but not my favorite to watch. I guess the list would most appropriately need to be titled "10 Most anticipated matches of all-time".

John and Devon 2004 superstar showdown in washington. Barb and Malin for sure, it was nice to see that one life. John and Farid was crazy. Marcio Barbosa and John right and specially LEFT at 2010 Mike Gould Classic. Travis and Alexy Voevoda 2003 Worlds Right handed. Crazy George and Anthony Delantonia 2010 Mike Would Classic. Marcio and Michael Todd super match. Engin and Pat Masterangelo left handed Mike Golud Classic I think it was 2006. John Brzenk and Andrey Pushkar I'm thinking 2008 Zloty (Poland), one of the best matches I've ever seen. Ron Bath and Taras I'm thinking 2006 Zloty (Poland)

we need a voting poll to choose the best match..quality of the match does not necessarily mean a short match.it can be with high quality and exciting long at same time.John beating Taras in that position requires quality at its highest since it was not a classic dead wrist shoulder press.
Kostadinov vs Kruglov 2007
Germanus vs Scodtaev 1999
Ferit vs John 2006
Devon vs John 2004
are long hook matches.
but long match = excitement is not my opinion.a long match of two of the top armwrestlers in the world,in an important event is what i care.
i dont know if TIME magazine has any of the average boxers fights in their top 10 or not but THRILLA IN MANILLA was a fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali who are amongst the best boxers in the history.

The list of “most anticipated” matches would look a bit different. Most of these would be super/challenge matches where we know in advance that two competitors will be facing off, fresh for fresh. A lot of the matches listed were significant, but there was not time to really build up anticipation. An example would be the Travis/Alexey match at the 2003 Worlds in Ottawa. I’m pretty sure that Travis’ decision to go to Worlds was done at the last minute.
Here are some of my picks for most anticipated matches:
Virgil Arciero/Cleve Dean (1978) – the total amount bet by each competitors backers was over $22,000 ($11,000 a side) – in today’s dollars this would be close to three times the amount. At the time Virgil was considered by many to best the top armwrestler in the world. Cleve, although coming off a win in Petaluma, was still pretty much unknown, but his sheer size was incredible. Result: Cleve won 2-0
Travis Bagent/Jerry Cadorette (2005) – Jerry was given odds on this one – Travis’ backers were putting up $10,000 to Jerry’s $5,000; Jerry came out of “retirement” for this one – he looked huge but his current abilities were unknown. Result: Jerry won 3-1
John Brzenk/Devon Larratt (2008) – When John chose to go inside with Devon to feel his strength in Chehalis in 2004, he got a glimpse of what Devon could bring to the table. Between 2004 and 2008, Devon progressed, beating Ron 6-0 in the Summer of 2007 and beating Travis 5-1 in May 2008. After 4 years, we got to see these two phenoms pull again and this time Devon handed John his first supermatch loss ever. Result: Devon won 6-0
John Brzenk/Denis Cyplenkov (2009) – Denis seemed to appear out of nowhere near the top of the armwrestling world two to three years ago. His training videos were frightening, as were his matches against many top European pullers. At the 2008 Nemiroff cup a vulnerability was exposed in his hand/wrist and John beat him. Several months passed and it was announced that John would face Denis in Las Vegas in June 2009. Everyone wondered how much stronger Denis would be as compared to his shape in Poland the previous fall. Once again, John proved that he could still control the match. Result: John won 5-1
