I had a 1" house main line break this week. Water was turned off by the water co and said...sorry...
Fixed the break, water supply is back on to the house with no issues.
However, I have a $5,000 water bill, verses an average $42 bill for the last yr. Water Co said I "used" 600,000 gallons of water.. I think i would have noticed that amount of water leaking in the yard. But I'm jumping through hoops trying to lower this bill. They have kindly dropped it to $2,800, but that is still non-realistic.
Any suggestions?
I have a 5/8"s meter, normal water usage is 8,000 gallons or so. My 4 bay aerospace facility used 800,000 gal in yr 2010. I could have filled my 1400sq ft house up to the ceiling 8 times with 600,000 gallons, to put that figure in prospetive

Ok real quick, was the leak before or after the meter? If the leak is before the meter it's the city's problem and they will fix it free of charge.. If the leak is after the meter then it's your Problem and you have to Pay the bill. So i assume the leak was on your side of the meter.. That sucks though...

Haven't consulted an attorney yet. Will do next week. The leak was 18" my side of the meter. Writing a letter to city manager to attend the water council meeting in March to pled my case..

They should put you on a payment plan..I don't see the water company eating it when it's your line? If they would do it for you then everyone would want that same treatment.

Having the county manager come out tom. There is only 1 possible way I have a chance. It leaked 600,000 from Jan 3 to Feb 2nd. And only 7,000 from Feb 2 to Feb 11.. My repair was made on Feb 7th. So if the flow rate was the same after the reading on Feb 2nd. When they shut the line off on Feb7th, my reading should have been over 100,000 vs the 7,000. So I'm hoping they'll back off the 600,000 and settle for 7,000 x 4 for the month, ending in a $300 bill or so. We'll see

Wow. I have a friend, his water company, in a diff county than i live in, allows their consumers one "leak" per yr where they dont have to eat the bill. He uses this "leak" freebie to fill his swimming pool every yr....lol

Sounds like either a defective or incorrectly installed meter. Or maybe you meter reader is cross-eyed! Tell them to put the old meter back on!

Really? could you please explain how a defective meter will cause a leak 18 inches from that point? Also what would putting the old meter in do for this guy?

Ends up that I'm going to owe $2250. Unless the calibration test comes back out cal by 2.5% (which isn't going to happen) Tried my best, but they aren't going to work with me any lower..
Could be worse I guess, could have broke inside the house and did a bunch of damage.
