A big thank you to the organizers of A1! The cash prizes up for grabs were amazing! $10,000+ individual prizes have only been offered a few times over the years (that I know of): - circa 1984 – A small invite only super-heavy tournament in Minnesota – Cleve Dean reportedly won approximately $10K
- 1986 – Over the Top World Championships – The winner of the super heavyweight professional division won $10K (Scott Norton)
- 1986 – Over the Top World Championships – The winner of the super heavyweight truckers division won a White Volvo truck with a reported value of approximately $100K (John Brzenk)
- 2012 – A1 Russian Open – The winner of the Absolute category won $10K per arm (Denis Cyplenkov)
The bikes offered at some of the Harley Pulls probably approached $10K in value. There have been a few supermatches where lots of money changed hands (Dean/Arciero ’78, Bagent/Cadorette ’05), but I don’t think any other tournaments offered this level of individual prizes. Many other events offered significant prize money, but spread out over many classes. For example, the Main Event (I and II) and the Curacao Forsa Tropical tournaments of the late ‘90s offered close to $40K in cash prizes. But I think A1 was the next biggest after the Over the Top World Championships. I remember a few years ago there was talk of a series of state events leading up to a national event where the winner would win a Hummer, but that didn’t get very far.

Devon had an extra bit of bad luck driving home from Niagara. He got a speeding ticket, which wiped away most of the winnings he actually earned!
