Why do people pay out $500 for overall but $75 for 1st ? Is this not stupid I would think the bigger the pay out in individual class the more entries you would get. Because if the overall prize is big then most likely u know who will win it . And its not fair to the smaller guys unless u are a top ten guy I have been to a lot of tournaments and never seen a small guy win it . Just lookin for thoughs

IMO it's because hardly anyone comes to a tournament to see smaller guys (unless they are a small guy). The big guns is where the attention is and the money is what draws them in.

Hey, I was just stating the obvious.
If you ask most competitors if they'd rather see one of the top 154 guys or say Richard Lupkes at their tournament, you know what the answer would be.

Yeah this is true ...
Bigger is better.
Even for a small guy I can admit that.
But does not bother me, ima fan too, so I love watching big guys go at it.

If you only have $500 to give away just put it in a cash box, each entry get one ticket then 1st place gets 3 tix 2nd gets 2 tix and 3rd get one. Throw all tickets in a bag and have the owner of the place holding the event or a kid from the crowd to pick a number. The person that has that tix gets the $500. Fair to everyone and may even add some entries when they know one tix can win the money.

To build on Bill's suggestion, which seems like a great idea, what about anyone that's never won a match being entered in a drawing for a chance to win back their entry fee? Maybe that would increase entries, keep more people there until the end, and also hopefully reduce the chances that a newcomer gets discouraged and never comes back.

One guy getting his Entry fee back = A participation trophy for everyone?? I don't see that connection. I think JC's idea was aimed at keeping new people at the tournament longer. The longer they're there, the greater the chance that they get hooked on the sport. I don't know if his idea is a good one, but i don't see where it celebrates mediocrity either.

Prize box tournaments keep the big name guys from flying out to the smaller tournaments. Some may like that but my overall goal isn't to win small tournaments even though I'm probably far from that.

I do not agree that everyone who competes should get a shot at the $500 (or whatever prize)
It is not a right, it should be earned. Wins and championships in this sport are earned by time on the table, time in the gym, etc etc etc. I would not like to see someone walk into their first event and walk off with the cash if he (or she) went 0-2. I would probably feel robbed (more like the athletes got robbed).
I've seen people win $1000 and never compete again. Just took the money and ran. I've also seen other "fair play" bul1crap that made me sick. NOT EVERYONE DESERVES TO WIN PRIZES.
I know this is getting slightly off topic from the original post so back to that. I'll pose a question to you. Why don't you host a big money tournament for light weight guys? There is nothing stopping someone from doing this. That is one of the many cool things about this sport, almost anyone can host a tournament, make their own rules, make their own weight classes. All they'd have to do is get people to show up.
