when you go to a business and ask them to sponsor your event, is there a formal contract? or is it mostly an honor system thing?

Ryan, I would suppose that it would depend upon how much you are asking from a sponsor and how well you know that person in charge. I never ask for more than $200 normally and I have no contract. (We live in Idaho remember)... Either they will sponsor or they won't. Usually we'd get the money right then or by mail a couple days later. After an event has been running for a few years like ours have, we have a few "regulars" who just need a phone call about the sponorship.
(Of course, looking back at the 2 years we ran 'The Main Event', we had no formal contract and we offering $24,000 the first year and $38,000 the second- now that I think about it, that could have been ugly if they decided to back out!) Too trusting, I guess!
At any rate, good luck...

There are also different types of sponsorship available as well. 90% of the time, it is money, however you can find sponsors for prizes other than money, or advertising. The Swamp has it's own built-in marketing system with two radio stations, so getting the word out to the general public is guaranteed. Also, Carey Nick has done a superb job by getting our local 98.1 sports radio to host us on their daily show The Ticket. Any time you can spread the word about the sport, and hopefully clear up the misconceptions the public has, it's great. I don't think you will have any problems getting any sponsors.

Ryan, you pay the potential sponsor $100 for a $90 sponsorship. I thought you knew this! What happened to RedBull? Elaine....
