Has anyone ever used tv ads to promote your events?
If so, how much did it cost you and how effective was it?

I think billboards are a bit cheaper. I was told that a while back but never tried.

if read that the average tv spot on local or regional channel ranges ayway from 13 to 60 bucks. per spot
Then the average billboard ranges from 700to 2500 per month.
Id rather a few spots on the local network

Ryan,
We had a promoter here in WA that used to use radio ads on the local rock and roll station. It seemed to work great for him. He always had new guys showing up and had the biggest attendance for tournaments that I have ever seen for WA. It was in the early 80's and he would get 30 to 60 guys per weight class. World Class attendance at a local tournament. I think the demand is still out there, just have to let the uninformed know about the tournament.

Ryan, Two years ago I spent $500 on radio ads... (and that was MINIMUM PRICE!) I will not do it again unless it's a trade with the radio station. I could have better spent my money on nice glossy posters to put up around the towns. Radio is just expensive and a crap shoot when it comes to getting good ad times.
I used billboards in 1995 when we hosted the AAA Nationals in Pocatello. They cost around $700 at that time and were up for a month. I think they had better exposure than the radio ads.
I don't know what tv time costs down south, but I wouldn't bother if I were you. Just try to get with the local morning shows to promote the event and then you have FREE tv time. I have armwrestled MANY morning show personalities and it drew alot of attention! Then, the local paper will pick up on it and there's more free advertising.
As far as paying for newspaper ads... one thing I did is put a bigger ad in the "Thrifty Nickel" want ads. I'm sure you have a free weekly ad paper where everyone picks one up to read and find a "good deal". THAT was good exposure when I did it and it cost like $40 for one week... but the circulation is fantastic!
Just some ideas from my experience... Elaine
