All elbow fouls should be called, and unless the refs have developed ESP or some other X-Files ability, they should not be expected to determine what is intentional or not. I'm bringing Johnny Cochran to argue my case if they ever implement the "intentional" or "advantage gained" rule. Well Todd you better save your pennies for Johnny. As these rules already exist. Both in the AAA and WAF.

The elbow rule is very simple, the problem is everybody want to get the advantage and regardless of what any one thinks, if your elbow comes off the pad, front, back, side offense or defense your gaining or stopping gains..
Again very simple like Todd comment "YOUR elbow, YOUR pad, YOUR responsibility PERIOD"
KEEP YOUR ELBOW ON THE PAD and this would not be an issue!
I for one have a hard time keeping my elbow on the pad, not the referees problem, my problem!

Bill is right! It is one rule that I'd like to see changed.

My complaint is when the elbow foul is called after the person is deemed winner. It happens everytime with the same ref. It's getting old.

Christian.... It is very disheartening to watch the many videos avail (thank you Gary and TK and all the videographers!!!) and see the elbows hops at the start, and during the match to gain, IMO, position of elbow fwd, shoulder back so as to gain leverage.....
