Somerset— Ryan Barnett and Arms for Christ have traveled all throughout the area, taking on any and all-comers in the sport of arm wrestling, while spreading their message about Jesus Christ, and what he means to each of them in their individual lives.
But, this weekend, Barnett for one will be sitting back and watching, as Arms for Christ will host their third annual Over-the-Top Double Elimination Arm Wrestling Tournament this Saturday evening here in Somerset.
“I’ve been praying and asking God for 500 total people to come out for the tournament, and the way it’s looking right now, it’s going to be close,” Barnett stated.
“Whatever the number turns out to be, I’ll be thankful and happy, but I really do want to see a big turnout,” added the leader of Arms for Christ. “It’s a family thing, and it’s a fun sport.”
There will be several awards and prizes given away at the event, as the contest has been divided up into several different weight classes and categories.
In the men’s right arm division, there will be four different weight classes; 155 pounds and under, 156 to 175 pounds, 176 to 199 pounds, and 200 pounds and over.
In the men’s left arm division, there are two weight classes; 199 pounds and under, and 200 pounds and over.
The women’s right arm division is open, and all participants, for their $25 entry fee, will receive a T-shirt for their participation at Saturday night’s event.
“We’ll be giving away a $50 Wal-Mart gift card, we’ll be giving away six, one-month memberships to Somerset Athletic Club, as well as two, two-week visits there,” said Barnett. “We’ll be giving away other various items also. We have a lot of free coupons to various restaurants throughout the area, so we think it’s going to be a very fun night for everyone, and it’s for the entire family, so we hope people will come out to this.”
“We hope we have a lot of spectators to come out, because admission is free, and it doesn’t cost anything to watch,” Barnett added. “We encourage people to come out, and be able to enjoy themselves. Pizza Hut is doing the pizza for me, Pepsi is doing the drinks for us, so it’s a very good thing, and it’s going to be a night for fun for everybody.”
The overall champion for the night will receive a cash prize of $250 along with a plaque, while the winner in each class in the right arm division will receive $75 and a trophy to the first three places.
The left arm and women’s division winners will receive $50 for first place, and trophies will be awarded to the first three places in those categories also.
But, it’s not about winning on this night.
For Barnett, who says he won’t be participating in his own tournament, it’s about something more.
It’s about having fun and enjoying the sport of arm wrestling, while spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
“Everybody in Arms for Christ will be participating but me, because I don’t want to pull in my own tournament,” noted Barnett. “I’m just doing this, to not only glorify God, but I want to get the sport out. I want somebody here in Somerset or somebody here in Kentucky to take this, so I’m not going to be participating. It’s a good thing to be the strongest guy in Somerset, it really is, but I want to give somebody else out there the opportunity to win my tournament.”
“The one thing that me and my team do this for, is we all have the mindset of winning souls and witnessing to the lost, and talking with those that are hurting,” said Barnett. “This ministry that the Lord has put in my hand, has allowed me to talk with people, that more than likely, aren’t going to go to church. But, they will come to an arm wrestling event.”
The weigh-ins for the third annual Over-the-Top Arm Wrestling event will get underway Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., and will run up to 5:30 p.m.
The event will be held at stop light number 27 on South Highway 27, in front of the Somerset Christian Fellowship building, next to the Kawasaki shop. The starting time is set for 6 p.m.
For more information, you can call Ryan Barnett at 875-4255.

Somerset — As professional wrestler Ric Flair always used to say, “To be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.”
And, next week at the Pulaski County Fair, when it comes to the sport of arm wrestling, Ryan “Strongarm” Barnett is quite frankly, “The Man.”
Barnett and his group of fellow arm wrestlers, Arms for Christ, will be at the fair all next week set up at one of the many booths at the fair, and their decree to the public is a pretty simple one.
“If you think you’re tough enough, or if you think you’re strong enough, then I’m issuing an open challenge to anyone out there,” stated Barnett.
“Anyone that’s interested, can arm wrestle me for $10, or any one of my team members for $3,” added Barnett. “I encourage everyone to come out and take us on, and see how they measure up when it comes to the sport of arm wrestling.”
It might be a tall order to measure up to Barnett.
At last year’s Pulaski County Fair, Barnett was issued a challenge by professional wrestler Marcus “Buff” Bagwell, who had wrestled earlier in the evening at the event.
No problem for Barnett. “Buff” didn’t get to strut his stuff on that night, as Barnett calmly took him down, first with his right arm, and then, with his left.
Today, Barnett is ranked number five in the world in a sport that he absolutely loves, but it’s more than the individual competition for Barnett.
Arms for Christ is just that; a group of guys that love arm wrestling, but they’re also about something else, and that is being a witness, especially to the young people they come in contact with, about their love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
“This is a ministry first and foremost, and we use the venue of arm wrestling to get our message out, especially to young kids,” stated Barnett.
“We especially like to witness to those kids that you see are hurting, and we try to use arm wrestling as a way for them to release their aggression, instead of turning to drugs and alcohol, or being out there on the streets fighting,” Barnett said. “This is our third year in this ministry, and it’s just awesome what God has done in my life, and how good he’s been to me.”
So, it’s not only about winning, or about knocking off an opponent at the table, but make no mistake about it, when it comes to arm wrestling, Ryan Barnett wins, and wins, and wins.
Barnett and Arms for Christ will be set up at the Pulaski County Fair every night next week, taking on all comers who want to see how they measure up against this special group of gifted and talented individuals.
So, if you think you have the muscle to put one of these guys down at arm wrestling next week, as the “Nature Boy” himself would proudly proclaim, “Come on down and walk the aisle.....Whoooooooo!!”
Ryan Barnett and Arms for Christ will be there ready to get it on with anybody.
Arms for Christ, led by Ryan “Strongarm” Barnett, will be set up this coming week at the Pulaski County Jaycees Fair, and will be challenging anyone to come match strength with them in the sport of arm wrestling. Arms for Christ travels all over Kentucky and surrounding states spreading the message of Jesus Christ, while at the same time introducing the sport of arm wrestling to all those interested. Later this summer, the group will be hosting the third annual, Over the Top Arm Wrestling Tournament in Somerset on August 12th. Members of the group are, front row left to right Ryan Barnett and Bill Brown. Middle row is Chad Ray, and standing in the back row left to right are John Bates and Anthony Edens. Submitted
