Verse: Galatians 1:12
“For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
General Outline
I. For I neither received it of man…
II. Neither was I taught it, ...
III. But by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Key Words:
Received, taught, revelation
Greek Words and Strong Definition of Key Words:
1. Received: Paralambano : verb: associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation) by anal; To assume an office; to learn, receive or take
2. Taught: didasko: verb: To teach
3. Revelation: apokalupses: verb: appearing; coming; lighten; manifestation; be revealed; revelation.
I. For I neither received it of man…
This phrase plainly says that Paul had not learned these great truths from human teachers, but by direct communion with God, even as the Twelve had learned it from Christ’s teachings. This section indicates that Paul’s Commission had been declared inferior to that of the twelve by his detractors, and that he had this in view when he was defending his apostleship. (pg. 36-37 Swaggert)
II. Neither was I taught it, ...
Paul denies his instruction from other men, as the channel through which he came to the truth. He is making the point that the gospel he preaches, was given to him directly by Christ, and as such, must not be added to or deleted in any form. The manner in which he received this message, actually the entirety of the new covenant, was totally different than the manner in which men normally learn things, as should be overly obvious according to the things he says. (pg 37 Swaggert)
III. But by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
This phrase actually refers to the removal of that which conceals, in other words, an uncovering. Revelation therefore is the Act of God of the Holy Spirit uncovering to Bible Writers Truth incapable of being discovered by man’s unaided reason. Revelation is the act of God the Holy Spirit discloses to the human mind. This means that Christianity is not a religion but a relationship with Christ that results from Divine Revelation. (pg 37-38 Swaggert)
