Verse: Galatians 2:6. But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person: ) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me
General Outline:
I. But of these who seemed to be somewhat,
II. (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me:
III. God accepteth no man's person: )
IV. for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me
Key Words:
Seemed, Somewhat, Accepteth, Added
Strong’s Definitions and Greek Words:
1. Seemed: dokeo: adverb: of the same meaning ; to think; by implication to seem (truthful or uncertainly)
2. Somewhat: Tis: Pronoun: Some or any person or object
3. Accepteth: Lambano: Verb: To accept or be amazed
4. Added: Prosanatithemi: Verb: To lay up in addition; to impart; to consult
Explanation and Application:
I. But of these who seemed to be somewhat,
Paul is referring to the false brethren otherwise known as the Judaizers. These were men who seemed to be of important stature, who came through the church preaching that in order to be saved you believe in Christ and follow the Law. Paul preached Jesus Christ and him Crucified or Justification by faith alone. When Luther added alone to the German translation it was to point out the fact that there were people (Judaizers) preaching against what Paul preached. Paul was saying that it is only Faith in Christ that justifies you, nothing more and nothing less.
II. (Whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me:
Seems to me like to be a pretty confident statement made by Paul. The New King James Translates it this way “whatever they were, it makes no difference to me.”. This is a statement that screams out the Paul was very sound in his belief in apostleship being authentic. That he was not inferior to the other apostles. Or any other teacher.
III. God accepteth no man's person: )
This simply says that God is no respecter of man, he shows no favoritism. We are all filthy in our sin. The only way to be cleansed from that is through the blood of Christ.
IV. for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me.
This phrase means that they contributed in no way to his Call to the Ministry, nor to his ability to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Consequently the Jerusalem Apostles imposed on him no burden of Doctrine or practice, and imparted to him nothing in addition to what he knew.
