Im on it alot and I know of several others. With the proper measures you can even have young teens on it. My space is safe as long as adults are aware of the safety features. I.E. No addresses, no phone numbers, nothing that could be traced back to you or your child. In fact you can set your page to a personal setting where you can prevent people from viewing your page without authourization. Some family's have group pages that seem to be just a good as personal pages. I have two in fact... one for me and one for my dog. Yeah my dog gets e-mail

actually I( like myspace its a great way to keep in touch with all different kinds of people. and find old friends you havent spoken to in years.
the problem that i have been hearing lately is the government taking notice of the site and harvesting all your personal info.

My wife and I are on it, because my daughters are and it is an easy way to stay in contact with them. We are always messaging each other and I get to see their new updated pictures. Just another tool for communication.

What would you guys think of if I and buddy wrote up some code to to insert into a myspace account that would set all safety feautures for yourself or your children? I have an idea to make a mod pack much like I would on a game that could install fatures to edit pictures on a beginner level, protect against certain age groups and put you in a hidden mode at all times. Just a thought... I know that Bigwood is into computers also, maybe he would into figuring it out with me?

I think there is to many preadators out there and this is just another chance for them to get closer to their victims. but that is my opinion.

like Cathy Bates said in, 'The Water Boy'... "...that is the devil" I say the same thing about myspace. Reason(s): - You have predators out there who do nothing but live to reek havoc on unsuspecting people (not just children)
- Children can easily lie about their age to get onto that site as a member without parental consent for initial setup and thereon.
- My second reason leads me to this one: Since the children are able to fudge their ages, children who think they know what is going on is unaware of the REAL dangers in the real world and how to spot them. This alone, with the maturity level of a 12 year old saying they are 14 (minimum age requirement to become a member) speaks volumes!!
- PLUS, who is to say the "new friend" on your child's "friend's list" is the person whom they are portraying themselves to be? That alone should be enough to scare you into regulating the usage of the site for your child.
With all of that having been said, I know there are security measures which can be taken to prevent a lot, if not all, of what I have listed. However, the child, with these barriers set up in front of them, will attempt to undermine you and your rules and TRY to find alternative measures to get online. Even though you have you HOME pc setup with these precautions, doesn't mean your child's friends does. I am not speaking of an adult's reason for using it. That would be entirely up to the adult. The child on the other hand, even though they may use it honestly in the beginning, can and does use it for other reasons which leads to deceit. I do not mean to sound like a sheltering parent, which I'm not, but I would rather "nip this in the bud" before something does happen, horribly. Like Matl'e said, not putting your address and other information which could lead less-than-honorable people to your door is the first thing that should be exercised. Take this scenario for food for thought: The computer your child is using is YOUR computer (which if searched, would be noted you are an adult) and she is talking to one of his/her friends. Who is to think any different that the person using that computer is NOT you? (Not reality on this end) I know other sites could, and do, present this same threat, but then again I am not suggesting to go anywhere else. Just use Yahoo Messenger without going to the public chat rooms.
