Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.
Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.
A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death.
"The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said.
Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

It is unfortunate indeed.
However, you're an idiot to swim with things that can kill you. He has pushed the envelope everytime he has put himself in the face of every animal he has encountered. By putting himself in the middle of a wild animals environment, it was bound to happen.
After all, we all said he was going to get it one day.
Hope his kids do not follow suit.

I'm glad someone started this thread already. I was going to say something if no one else had. His death is very unfortunate; however, not many people die doing what they love. His animated personality will be missed.

I care. I think Steve Irwin was an awesome human being who gave alot to anyone willing to watch him. I am saddened by the loss. He brought alot of great things to alot of people with his love of life personality and his willingness to put risk aside for something that he loved. The smartest statement on here was one that Brittany typed. "Not many people die doing what they love." I know risk all to well. I have lost friends who lived their lives by taking major risks everyday. I have been right next to them when it has happened. I never once thought them idiots, or that their death was "eventual". What I thought was that they left with a smile which is more than most of us get to do. People that dont take risk dont understand those that do. It doesnt make one side dumb or irrational. It just makes them different. Not to mention Steve was killed by an animal who is not at all known for being aggressive and if I read correctly has only killed 17 people world wide. How many dogs have killed humans world wide I wonder.
I think my little quote at the bottom sums up exactly what I am trying to say here.
