I love watching the classics on ESPN. The late 60's and 70's. Jerry Quarry throwing down with Joe Frazier until Joe wore him out. Jerry trying to get inside on THE GREATEST and unable to land more than 5 or six good shots in 3 rounds. Those guys could slip punches and move their feet. Most of the heavyweights today are just plodders. Ali- Frazier, GREAT FIGHTS!!!

I liked some of the nicknames: James "Bone Crusher" Smith. "Big" George Foreman-only michael buffer can do it the best.

I like Foreman and Frazier's two fights. Any Ali/Clay fights are great. It seems like the fights were so much more brutal back then.
Also, footage of Archie Moore, great defense even in his late fourties.

Agreed, more brutal and the fighters fought more. Archie Moore, the classic old school fighter; he fought all the time. He didn't take a year in between fights but fought toe-to-toe with best without all the intensive studying and ended up fighting well over 200 fights. He was a brawler, but a great defensive fighter and did his best work against top ranked fighters. To this day no boxer has knocked out more fighters than Moore, but because of the frequency of his fights and early losses, Moore doesn't tend to get the credit other fighters do. I know an old fighter from Mexico (now trains in CT) named Gaspar "The Indian" Ortega, and he fought for nearly 35 years unofficially and was fighting every other month. Gaspar is an older fella now (in his 70s), and weighs about 140 pounds, but can still throw down. Great thread by the way.

Lyle- Foreman, Norton-Foreman. They were trying to kill each other, not laying on each other waiting for the bell to ring. Not much defense, pure knock out power in both hands. Archie Moore, a great fighter. Fought all of the best fighters past his prime and still held his own.

Randal "TEX" Cobb, maybe not a great fighter but was never knocked down in his professional career.

John, Very true. That guy had a great chin and heart. Just not enough ablity to win a title. If he could fight today's heavyweights he would have a great chance at holding one.

Casey, Would that fight be HBO PPV or ABC World Wide of Sports? Of Course--Cheap Seats on ESPN Classic may have a spot open?
