Post by Sarge on marunde-muscle.com:
Friends, we suffered a great loss in the strongman community last evening. The Sequim Crew was doing what they do. Training hard and particularly training Jesse for the WSM contest in Anaheim. He died quickly and painlessly.
The squat set was as follows: 230kg x 8 190kg x 8 150kg x 8 110kg x 8 70kg x 8 Followed immediately by: 600# tire flip 265# stone load All of this was done with no rest between sets. Rack, pull, go At the completion of these sets Jesse laid on his back, on the cold floor like normal. Breck and Sarge noticed that his breathing was laborious. Jesse became incoherent and stopped breathing. We administered cpr, called 911 and continued to resusitate until paramedics arrived. They set up the defibrillator, epinephrin, to no avail. He was worked on for over an hour between Breck, Sarge and the paramedics.
These are the facts as it happened. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We appreciate your support and prayers.

Very sad news. As a fan of Jessie I felt down all day yesterday after learning of his death. I feel for his family and their loss.
RIP big man!

Judging from the many threads I have read, Jesse Marunde was very well liked and had positively impacted the lives of many, many people all over the world.
It's astonishing that someone with so much potential and in such incredible physical condition can pass at such a young age.
Of his many, many impressive lifts, the one that most impressed me was the farmers walk with 390-pounds in each [!!!] hand. In the opinion of some, Jesse was the best hope for an American to win the WSM competition for the first time since 1982.
There are many tributes to his great but short-lived legacy on Youtube.
Here's a few:

The info I was looking at was a little dated - it turns out Phil Pfister recently became the first American to win the WSM title in 22 years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_PfisterMarunde was definitely a serious contender having been a runner up previously.

Yeah if I wasn't born and raised in WV I probably wouldn't have remembered, but since there is so much negative crap about WV you try to point out the good things like the WSm champion and Jenifer Gardner, and in the armwrestling world T. Bagent

Just wanted to add I was not trying to change the subject of this thread by pointing that out. It is a very tragic and sad thing when any high caliber athlete or any young man dies before his time.

If WSM was about only power Zavickas would win every time.I wish they would show the WSM early 80s again on ESPN classic

Yes in his very first showing at WSM he made it to the finals! Then finished second to The three time winner/ legend Marius Pujinowski! He indeed was great.

Have they said what the cause of his death was yet? officially.... His father said it was a heart attack. The complete autopsy results will not be available for 30-days.

Hard to see this kind of thing happen. I hope we don't see this begin to show in the armwrestling family. It's nice to see armwrestlers that have been around for many years, still healthy and still going to tournaments. 27 is just too young for anyone. I hope it was not related to the type of wheaties he may have been eating.
