My Son Michael had a contest and had to write and recite an oral report to his class. He won the contest and then went against the other winners in the school. He won that and his next step is county. I wanted to post what he wrote and read (By himself) I was impressed and wanted to share it.
Here is what he said.
Armwrestling
"Armwrestling is a fun and competitive sport. It takes technique, lateral strength and hand strength.
Hand strength is the most important. Hand strength is what allows you to make a move and control the other guy in order to complete the particular move you are making.
Before my first tournament I practiced for 2 months straight! I developed my hand strength by doing pull-ups on a beam while holding on just with my fingertips! I did 4 sets of 12 every other day. I also did wrist curls. I did 4 sets of 50 with a 5 pound dumbbell. By the time I was done with my last set my forearms were burning and numb. It was very hard to do.
Another important part of Armwrestling is called “Lateral Strength” You get this by Armwrestling other people on an official Armwrestling table. I armwrestled my dad every day. He would let me pull on him hard but if he wanted to he could have broken my arm! Another exercise I did was called “Pull Downs” This is the opposite of “Pull ups”. Instead of pulling your body up you pull weight down.
There are two main moves in Armwrestling. The first one is called “A hook”. This is where you take the opponents hand inside and press him to the pad. The other move is called a “Top Roll”. This is where you go outside and over your opponents hand. If you are fast enough, the top roll is a much easier move and you can win a lot faster.
After all our training the time finally came and we left for North Carolina. My first tournament was in the North Carolina State Championship at the civic center in Abermarle. I was very nervous and wondered who I was going to go against. The ride was long and when we finally arrived I weighed in at 62 pounds. The scale said 28 but that was because it weighed me in Kilograms. 1 Kilogram equals about 2.2 pounds.
After the weigh ins we went back to the hotel and went to sleep. When I woke up I was ready. We went to the civic center and the tournament director went over all the rules.
Once the tournament started I was very excited. They called my name and I went to the table. I could hear my dad yelling to me to hit hard so I did. I wacked him so fast I couldn’t believe it and the crowd went crazy! They were clapping very hard and I was happy. Every kid I pulled against I beat and I won first place! I was very happy because my dad was there and cheered me on! It was an experience I will never forget.
My next tournament is here in Destin this July. If any of you want to learn how to armwrestle my dad can teach you and then you can come and pull with me!"
