I was umping my oldest boys minor league game on Mon. when something confused me. The pitcher had thrown a ball inside. The batter tried to avoid it, but was unsuccesful. The ball hit the batter in the hand and nicked the butt of the bat. The batter made no forward motion to swing, just jumped back to avoid the pitch. Is this a foul ball or a hit batter?

If the ball made contact with the batter before the bat, it should be a walk. But you might want a second opinion. I'm sure rules have changed since I was a kid.

•The hand is not part of the bat. Many people think that the hand is part of the bat and that a player shouldn't be awarded first if hit in the hand. This is incorrect. As long as the batter is attempting to get out of the way and is hit in the hand, then the correct call is to award the player first base.

Anthony is right. If there was no forward motion (swing/check swing attempt), it's not a foul. Head to first or charge the mound!!! Lol
