Great thread.
I believe "Pulling John" accomplished this infinitely better than "Over The Top" did, although I agree with everything you wrote.
John, the aging champion. Will he find inspiration to continue? Will he let a possible loss steer him into the sunset of his illustrious career?
Alexey, the heir apparent. The impending hero. Everything to gain, the brass ring inches from his grasp.
Travis, the affable villain who plays the heel for his benefit. Deserving of victory but will victory deliver him from the weight of his past?
Plenty of catharsis to go around. A tragedy if ever there was one.
The giant miss for our sport is that the movie was not immediately turned into a reality show or a series The characters were already developed and the audience was already invested in them as well as the story.

I think it's a mistake to believe that the Greeks invented catharsis simply because modern literature attributes the word to Greek philosophy. The Greek language is very precise, and for that reason alone they were able to really nail down into words what are basic, commonplace emotions shared across the whole of human experience. The Greeks did not invent these things, they simply did a wonderful job describing them.
Every major religion in the history of man shares a common thread, not because the Greeks codified common emotions into words, but because the fundamental human experience is that there is a God and there are basic tenets that the universe operates under. Humans across the millenia have tapped into the common fiber of our existance. We like to separate people by geography and time, but we are all the same and come from the same creator. It would be more strange if most of humanity did not gravitate toward spiritual commonality.
