It's been a while since someone did a movie review thread.
I had a really slow week and I was able to get to two new releases.
ACT OF VALOR:
The reviews I've read online are pretty honest and accurate. This movie began several years ago as a series of recruiting ads. The production company filmed live-fire training runs with SEALs. The result was so positive that the project became a full length movie. You can read full reviews anywhere on the net, so I'll just give you my take on it.
Go see it. It really is that good. The SEALs aren't actors and it shows during the dialogue when they are trying to string together the thin plot. Shakespeare it ain't. But the movie needed a plot to tie the action scenes together and they did what they could. For non-actors, they did great. There are a few guys who really could pull off the acting. Pay special attention to Senior Chief.
The action scenes are the best you will ever see, precisely because you aren't watching actors. You are seeing professionals kick ass professionally.
Yes, the plot is thin. Yes, it's a recruiting tool at its core. Yes, it's awesome.
THE LORAX
Pass. I almost walked out with my kids in tow, but they were enjoying the 3D and the furry creatures, oblivious to the message. The ham-fisted message is unabashed Leftist Indoctrination. There is not even a hint of subtlety. It is blatant, over-the-top propaganda with a nasty tone. Corporations are evil. Business of any kind is greed. Manufacturing is impossible without full-on annihilation of nature, and companies love it.
The worst part is that the parts that should be he happiest, the singing and dancing, are where most of the hateful garbage is thrown at your kids. The songs go from soft attack to being outright threatening and scary. The message is clear- if you have a job you are an evil planet-destroyer.
Oh, how I wish I was exaggerating. But aside from all that, the movie sucked.
