i have a question for anyone who has broken their arm or had a nerve severed. last year the surgeon severed my radial nerve in surgery of my humerus break. i had it re attached in june and most my movement and feeling has come back. In the past I always had a strong hand due to rock climbing. its been 10 months since my last surgery and i still only have about 50% hand strength... is this something that takes years to regain due to a nerve being severed?

Last year I tore my pronator and flexor muscles off the bone at the elbow. The Dr said my Nerve was pinched so he stretched it just a little and cleaned it up. He said it would improve my grip beings it was pinched. But if anything it is weaker but that could be do to a lot of things. Bob Brown has had a lot of work done and can probably answer better then I can. But I have just been focusing on static holds with a pinch grip, wrist curls and using fat grips on my dumbell curls. This has brought me back to where I was grip wise. Good luck and hope to hook up with you in the future.

I didn't have nerve issues when i broke my left arm in 97, HOWEVER, Both my Ulnar nerves were compressed (NOT SEVERED) from the elbows down during a 7 hr back surgeryIN Feb, 2011. The right has come back to almost 100%, whoever the left (figures..LOL) is the same....5 mons after the back surgery, I had surgery to DEcompress the ulnar nerve on the left side, by moving it to the other side of the elbow. IT DIDN'T WORK..So I have ALL the tell tale signs of nerve damage AND some times paralysis from my elbow down and into the ulnar ( pinky) side of my hand and my middle, ring and pinky fingers. My pinky usually stays up if I make a fist... i was told it would come back in a yr....its been over 2.... I would do all exercises from shoulders, down the arm and into the hand....Since the nerve travels out of the brachio plexis, down into the hand GOOD LUCK

If I remeber right Bob Brown who has suffered from nerve damage for years has some of his own stem cells injected into the area. I know Bob had the same surgery as Christian to nove the nerve and it didn't work for him either

Robert Baxter, spiral fractured his humorous and in the process damaged his Radial nerve as well. It was not totally severed. I will see him tonight and ask him. I will say that even 10 years later he has some lack of range of motion in his fingers but his strength came back 100%. I will ask him how long. I think it was well over a year.

Hello Brandon, I snapped some tendons in my hand and durning surgery they jacked up some of the nerves in my hand. The dicipline is in the patients you will have to have with it. Your body is always trying to heal, the hard part is staying out of it's way and let it do it's job. Start becoming an expert on therepy and healing of your situation. I used lots of reps, prob in the millions with little or no resistance and it did take time. I still have numbness issues and limited mobility but i'd say I have re-gained 90% which if happy with.
All the best with your recovery.

I broke mine fairly close to yours and had severly damaged the same nerve... At this point I can close a COC #2 almost a 2 and 1/2.... my hand was really weak until i started actually trying to strengthen it. It wont just bounce back without doing strength exercises for your hand. With muscle memory it comes back faster.. just not by itself..

Hi Brandon,
Most surgeons will tell you that if nerve damage has not recovered in the 1 to 2 year time frame that it will most likely not continue to recover at that point. Good luck!

according to Robert Baxter its about 1 month for every 1/4 in. from the point it was severed to the wrist line.
