I saw this in the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS the local paper here from the Associated Press.
"IOC MIGHT ADJUST FOR 2012 GAMES "
" London- Golf , Rugby , Squash , Karate and Roller sports are in the running for possible inclusion at the 2012 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be " studied further " as part of a review of the Summer Games competition shedule. The IOC is assesing the 28 sports on the program of the Athens Oplympics last month to determine wether changes should be made. The list of sports will remain the same for the 2008 Beijing Games , with any modifications to be made in 2012 . The IOC willdecide on the sports program- and select the 2012 host city- at it's session in Singapore in July. IOC president Jaques Rogge repetedly has said sports only will be added if others are dropped . The maximum will stay at 28 sports , with about 10,500 athletes. In 2002 , Rogge proposed baseball , softball and modern pentathlone be dropped and golf and rugby added . But IOC members resisted and put off any vote until after the Athens Games . "

Matt I believe that the host nation of the Olympics can recommend new disciplines to be included in the games... As Great Britain are in the running to host the 2012 games I have been looking into the whole thing... But we are still being held up by the whole 'political' Bull' - we need regular dope tests - a regular united governing body etc...etc... in the UK, we are always told that we need to have around 30zillion members to be recognised by any IOC!! It is very frustrating for us all... anybody else had any dealings with IOC or similar?

All, I have contacted 54 separate sports organizations affiliated in some form or fashion with the Olympics, these are all groups that have successfully gotten themselves into the Olympics or are a US group that rolls up to a another organization that is affiliated with or is part of a sport that is currently in the Olympics, I have not contacted any of the IOC specific groups and there are many, simply because I was trying to get some real straight answers about what was required of us as a sport, what did the others do to get that level, what of the alleged requirements we have been told about really have to be done and to what extent.... before we started pestering any of the IOC groups.
We have all seen the amount of competitors and countries that are alleged to be required, we have all seen that drug testing is required, we have also all been told for a long time that we must have unification before we would be considered.
I will offer you the questions that arise in my head when I hear or read these statements, and what few things I have found out.
Are there really that many people in the world that partake in 10 meter air rifle? Much less are there as many countries and participants world wide to make it an Olympic sport?
Partial answer; no there are not however shooting which is the parent organization for the 10 meter air rifle was already an Olympic sport so by affiliating themselves with that group they qualify.
Are we really to believe that the 10 meter air rifle group is regularly testing for control substances in the manner that we are being led to believe armwrestling as a sport would have to put in place?
Partial answer; no they do not, though they do have basic drug testing requirements when qualifying for the Olympic competitions, the sport as it exists day to day does not have a back breaking drug testing policy, and it does appear that there are varying degrees of requirements of drug testing depending on the scope of the event, I have not gotten to the bottom of this yet, but it is somewhat of a moot point because as a strength sport we would receive no such accommodation.
This unification thing is tricky, to put it simply the IOC will only deal with one group, that is true, however there is no requirement who that group is, meaning it does not have to be anything but a qualifying group, this may be hard to explain but as an example there was a sport that was very similar to us in that they had may organizations and federations all over the world, they were never going to unify, so someone took the lead had a game plan on what was required and then eventually got all of the other groups to pledge affiliation for no other reason, with no other strings and or function than getting into the Olympics.
Now most sports added to the Olympics now a days never have to go through any of this because they are or become aligned with an existing organization that is already in, such as the air rifle to the shooting group, trampoline to the gymnastics group or the synchronized diving to the diving group. Many of the requirements for this manner of inclusion are not as significant because in this manner, a sport only has to comply with the standards of the group they become aligned with.
I am only bringing this up because the topic arose again and I am in no way prepared to make any proposals on how we should consider proceeding, I am simply trying to get the real facts and options that are in front of us so we as the armwrestlers can be educated on the subject and participate in moving this sport forward.
