I dont pay attention to football but im going to pick O.J. becuase he gave the courts one heck of a run around about him killing his wife and he ran for a looonng time from the cops I remember that i was in junior high and we watch the whole thing.

I voted for Walter Payton.

BARRY SANDERS.
When he was playing, he was the most dynamic athlete on the field. Averaging over 5.0 yards per carry and he could also catch the ball. Too bad he retired while in his prime. Good thread Scott.

Barry Sanders!
If he did not retire so early in his career, he would have set rushing records that may never be broken. He had a chance to have incredible longetivity, because he hardly ever took the big hit.
What a shame...

Hands down Jim Brown...After 8 or 9 years ( remember the seasons back then weren't 16 games like now, they were 12 ) he retired at the height of his career ( like Sandy Kaufax ) to go make the movie Dirty Dozen.
Lost the Heisman to Paul Horning, who quartebacked Notre Dame to a spectacular 1-9 season, the only Heisman winner who was on a team with a losing record...Hmmm....... Wonder why the Golden Boy won?...:-)....
Loved Payton and Sanders but......

Tough, Tough, Tough,
I would have to start with Jim Brown for exactly the reasons Christian stated, no one dominated a game at that position like Jim Brown.
Then I would have to go with Barry Sanders for what he was able to do purely on his own while playing for a very poor team. Then Marshall Faulk he can do it all… He is a scat back that could power run and he is a better receiver than almost any number two receiver on any NFL team.

Simon: I say Payton first, because of the horrible teams he was on in the 70s and early 80s. NO LINE...Granted Barry didn't exactly have a GREAT line either.. I hate to say this, O.J. would have to be somewhere around these guys. 2,000 yds in 12 games.... All 3 ahead of Faulk...

Different game when those guys played versus now, I would have a tendency to say the job of a running back in today’s game is vastly more diverse than in yester year.
