My son is 3.5 years old and has a cronic nail biting problem. He bites them so bad that the nail is almost gone...completly. He now is moving on to the skin around the nail because the nail is too short to get ahold of......
Has anyone come across this problem B4 and do you have some kind of solution.... I thought about putting hot sauce on his fingers but my wife shot that down right away... any help is appriciated..

While maybe not Hot stuff, maybe some non-tummy rumbling stuff that is just bad tasting. Or maybe a reward system the less he does it the better. This worked with my girl and the thumb sucking.
My 10 cents.

Harold,
When it comes to children it sometimes is better to be paranoid then miss an important symptem of a bigger problem. So wiith this mind dont kill the messenger! Child molestation can cause nail biting manifestations as well as a myriad,of other weird behavior. I know you dont ,but there are baby sitters aunts uncles friends , remember most people never beleive that it will or is happening to them. So Like I said better paranoid than sorry. Take him immediately to a child phsycologist. Has there toileting patterns changed at all ?( bed wetting , accidents ) on a lighter note some kids can have mild food allegies to "processed ( enriched ) white flour" as well as "milk" and it can intensify naturaly occurring O.C.D. tendincies to a more moderate to severe level bottom line it could be nothing, but it could be everything !!! Take no chances My prayers are with you and your child Christopher Myers

Hot sauce would burn the sensitive nail bed and cuticle but they make a bitter apple product in nail polish form specificly for nail bitting the doctor will refer you. but it would only stop the symtem you need to know the cause. It is definately caused by a nervous ( state ) you need to know what caused that Christopher Myers Concerned parent not trying to be a busybody

Thanks for the advice guys. Chris you make a lot of sense with the nervousness. We have known for quite some time now he is a nervous kid. He also does drink a lot of milk....I mean, a lot of milk. Could that be the cause of why he is so nervous, or something to enhance the nervousness?? We are cutting back on it now for other reasons, we will see if it helps. I think I will get some nasty nail polish and see if that works.
I am too a nail biter and he could be imitating me, Im not down to the bone or anything but it still happens. I am ruling out any sexual misconduct because he is with us 24-7. My wife stays home with the kiddos. I am also thinking of getting him involved in some kind of physical sport and maybe that will help too.
Thanks again guys and if anyone else has advice that they think works.....lets hear it.

Harold,
Hey -- my daughter did the same thing - especially when me and her dad split up-- my childs dr gave me (can't remember the name it has been 6 years now) some stuff to rub on her fingers -- it was the most awful tasting stuff - and it didn't wash off. he said that it will break from sucking thumbs, biting nails - everything. It only took about 2 days -- she hasn't bitten them since. Now of coarse she is 10 and has claws.. haha -- oh well par for the coarse.
