Dan Mason died last night at 51 years old. He was a great friend and even though he retired a 5 time National armwrestling champion in the mid 80's we talked often about life and sports until he passed.
Dan use to live in Chicopee MA and has lived in Charlotte NC where Im headed tonight the past 8 years.
Dan was a fierce competitor and was on the original Merle meeter list as the best arwrestler at 240 lbs ever.
He will be missed.

the Arm Bender magazine june 1992;(not the whole article)
Danny Mason doesnt like to be beaten, not in sports;not in life.
as an armwrestler,he was among the toughest, fiercest super heavyweights ever to compete in the sport.he gave each match his all-and then some.he seemed superhuman at times, some said;and he wasnt afraid to knuckle down with some of the best of the sport-Cleve Dean,Virgil Arciero,Danny Stone,Joe Carabetta,Lynn Perry,George Hood and Mike Shadduck.
Mason has always been a fighter,it seems, and he doesnt like to lose. "I WAS PUSHED TO BE BEST.DURING THE TIME I ARMWRESTLED,I ONCE WENT THREE YEARS WITHOUT GETTIN BEAT.I JUST HATED TO LOSE".
"I CANT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT MASON"says Mike Shadduck of Massachusetts, who competed against Mason and maintainsa friendship with him."HE IS A WORLD CHAMPION".
Bob Tosoni, another former puller from Massachusetts, agrees."AS A COMPETITOR,I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PERSON THAT COULD PREPARE HIMSELF IN SUCH A MANNER AND JUST FOCUS ON ARMWRESTLING",he said.
in 1976,as a 242 pound puller,Mason beat Apache Dann Carr to win his first seated nationals.the following year,he went to Houstan, where he beat Joe Carabetta for the world championship."HE WAS VERY QUICK"said Carabetta."HE WAS A TECHNIQUE ARTIST".
At his peak,he weighed nearly 290pounds,sported 21,5 inch biceps,and could bench press 535 pounds.he was powerful,intense,and strong,his opponents say.
"I WAS ALWAYS PSYCHED"Mason said."I WAS IN MARS.YOU COULDNT TALK TO ME AND I DIDNT HEAR ANYTHING YOU SAID(during a competetion).A LOT OF PEOPLE TOOK IT TO WRONG WAY;THAT S JUST THE WAY I WAS IN COMPETETION.I WAS ON A MISSION".
"WHEN HE BEAT MOE BAKER"added Carabetta."HE JUMPED OVER THE ARMWRESTLING TABLE BECAUSE HE WAS SO PHYCHED".
"IT WASNT FUN;IT WAS TORTURE.I JUST WANTED TO WIN;I HAD TO WIN.ITS THE WAY I WAS ABOUT SPORTS SINCE I WAS YOUNG.I WASNT EVEN HAPPY WHEN I WON.I WAS MY BIGGEST CRITIC.I JUST CRITICIZED MY SELF AND I WAS NEVER HAPPY".but Mason has changed his outlook on life.he s more at ease now.
there is little doubt that Mason can do anything but well at whatever he chooses.he is a champion athlete,a dedicated husband and father and besides...he hates to lose.
