I was very bored today and came across this: Apparently, these people put on these type of tournaments in Iowa at local fairs and then there is a huge event at Iowa State Fair every year in Des Moines. Spectators, TV....This has been going on for almost 30 years, and I've never heard of it. only problem is well watch the video, there's a machine...well just watch it...it looks dangerous and unsafe...well at least to me it does. Any veterans want to chime in here? This big event takes place next Sunday apparently but whose heard of it?? General commentary is also welcome of course, too. That's been around for a long time now. It never really caught on but a number of people say it's a lot of fun.

being from Iowa I have done this before...one time. hated it due to lack of motion/flexibility. you can not move if you are in a bad spot so your arm will give out. very dangerous but the funny thing is people that follow this kind of sport think regular armwrestling is a joke! I pulled some guy that wanted to show me how to do it and he was some bigtime never had lost stud. we set up and I pushed him over with side pressure and he kept wanting to go again and again getting pissed off about being beaten in front of all his followers! the key is to get all the way out on the bar where your palm is covering the end of the handle. and leverage takes over from there with side pressure. dont waste your time folks

That machine scares me. No good can come of that.
The nickel reference is about the 'never been beat' guy. It's why I don't even bring up armwrestling to non-armwrestlers. No matter where you go in this this world, as soon as armwrestling comes up the guy you're talking to has this friend who has never ever been beat. He's known and feared throughout the county. He beats everyone on the hood of his pickup truck. He darn near threw Earl Jr. acrost th' hood, and Earl Jr. is a star football player at Skeeter High! He bench presses all the weights the gym has at school.
If you look closely at some tournaments, once in a while you'll spot this elusive champion. He'll be the one with his butt poked out two feet from the table. Sometimes he will even go to another event, this time he'll have learned to jam his foot up and sideways against the table leg.

John many years ago my brother and I would put on events locally and he happened to be freinds with the warden of a small prison near here. the warden thought it would be cool if we put on an event inside the prison for the inmates. had we thought this out more we would of realized the butt whippin we were about to get from these cats. we held the event in the gym where all the inmates worked out and after a brief power outage (yeah scary) we started showing the guys how to armwrestle. I hooked up with a guy that had been in there since he was 18 and was now 35 or so and he held most of the bench press records nationally in the prison system. astonishing bench press numbers. well we pulled and he gave it to me pretty good. I was pissed but he told me that if I had been in a place where I got good meals everyday and was allowed to just eat sleep and work out constantly I would be a freight train too. To this day I have never pulled anyone even close to the strength of this guy at 170lbs or so. he was in for a killing another gang member but was scheduled to be released that month. cool guy but just shows that there are folks that are flat out nightmare strong that would easily be champs if they learned to armwrestle. we never did get back there for a second event!

No doubt the world is full of guys who would be great armwrestlers. Every one of found our way to this sport one way or the other.
