What inspires me is the friendship and sportsmanship I have gotten from this sport. What inspires me is watching elder statesmen like Norm Devio and knowing there is no end to getting stronger, or smaller pullers like Gabe Accardi and feeling what real pulling power feels like. These guys make me realize what a complex and exciting sport this is and how far I need to go to acheive greatness. All of those who do this sport at a loss of time, $ and a lot of pain for the sheer love of competition!! It inspires me when people show up at my house to practice even when I'm not feeling it and end up pulling strong and feeling great!!

Pure love for the sport!
Armwrestling has always been a part of my life in some way ... and contributed to the person I am today. The sport can make you humble as much as it can make you feel like king of the hill. After winning the Worlds in Costa Rica in 1983 ... I was on a all time high ... but that changed after I was hit on my motorcycle by a drunk driver ... and left me in a wheelchair and my left arm paralyzed. From deep depression I reached for the one thing that meant so much to me ... and that was armwrestling! I never forget how different armwrestlers inspired me to once again try to acheive my personal best ... despite the handicap I would have. Being inspired help me get out of the wheelchair and adapt a way to become a challenge at the table to some of the best out there. Inspiration comes in many forms ... but my friends in the sport have given me more than I can count.
Even now ... with the pain and problems I have with my right arm ... I smile at the new generation of armwrestlers ... and I continue to train new people to be inspired by the same sport I was. ;D

Watching Vern Martel come back from a horrific accident and blow away the competetion in Petaluma, in spite of those injuries, is something that has inspired me in all facets of my life since the day I witnessed it.
Vern is a giant to me.

The fact that I still suck at AW, and it gives me a good goal to shoot for, stay "skinny" at 176lb
