So why doesn't every tournament have the competitors start in the straps and a refs grip? It would cut down on soooo much bullcrap at the table and it will keep everything fare from the start for everyone?

Straps are fair? LMAO
Howabout AWers NOT being afraid to AW, and not NEED to go into the straps, to get an advantage?
OR easier, start in a hook..OMG the poor TOPPERS would HATE that...LOL...And see how many 'slip" out..U CAN TOP OUT OF A HOOK...

I agree Christian I'm tired of watching people at the table take sooooo much time to get a grip than go to a refs grip than the straps. my point is just start that way.

Because knowing how to get a better grip is part of AW. However, most armwrestlers are cry babies and only want to exact grip that they get every time in practice, which is usually NOT a legal one. This is were you need refs that will actually enforce the 30 sec or 1 min rule. And give a legal refs grip.
I always love a good CRY BABY story about ARM wrestlers vs HAND wrestlers. HHHMMM.....maybe Football should of never invented the forward pass or Basketball should not of invented the 3 pt shot.
HAND wrestlers.......Strengthen your Arms ARM wrestlers......Strengthen your Hands

Starting in straps and refs grip is no guarantee that it will run faster.
You're forgetting about the guys who grip up and start in about 10 seconds. Straps take time, so does setting the grip. There is NO guarantee that a ref setting the grip is fair either, someone always has an advantage.
Leave it alone. Getting a good grip is part of aw technique - anyone who says it's not doesn't know enough about the sport.
If two pullers are known to want straps they could request it when they step up to the table. If both agree then it's fine.
Other than that, let the boys fight. The battle stats as soon as your name is called, as it should be. We need LESS ref intervention and more battles between the competitors.

I've obviously been following what you've been writing Christian. I'm a slow learner though, I'll get there some day.

The single biggest reason I see for Ref's grips is going to hurt a lot of feelings, but here goes: Novice Mindset.
Somehow, every single armwrestler has been taught that they need to wrap their fingers completely around the back of somebody's hand to get a fair grip. HEY DUMBO: YOUR FINGERS DON'T GET LONGER BY TRYING TO SWALLOW THE OTHER GUY'S HAND. As soon as you straighten up your wrist and take that carve out, your fingers are going to end up exactly where they would have landed all along.
But every damned armwrestler who ever armwrestled got taught to wrap around his opponent by his Novice buddy at practice when they were starting out and it gets burned into their brain like it came from a branding iron.
Walk up to the table. Put your elbow down. Fold your fingers over. DONE. Yeah, there will be some slight adjustment based on where you want your fingertips or how much palm contact you want. But that takes about ten seconds if the other guy is doing the same.
What eats the clock is exactly what Bob said. One of the two believes he needs to feel like he has the SUPER ULTIMATE DOMINANT SWALLOW YOU UP GRIP or else he isn't getting a fair shake. Oh, and he wants the other guy completely off his thumb. And the other guy has to be bent backwards, but HE can have a slight cock in his wrist....
It's a Novice mindset, and guys never let go of it because they get it at practice every week.

To add to / sum up what Mr. Wilson said. It's imperfect practice. Guys practice with shoulders carved, wrists bent, double capping thumb etc. They get to a tournament and press the "Oh sh1t" button when they dont feel like they have the ultimate grip.
Better practice makes better armwrestlers.
