Punching power comes from the hips and back, when your pinned down theres not much power in your punches.
if you over extend when your on your back it opens a lot of submission possibilities.
Koscheck is a great wrestler( div 1 ncaa champion) not really trained in stand up and since the rules favored his style he won, not pleasing to watch to the average joe but to hard core fans it wasn't that bad

Also have to keep in mind, on your back you're fighting gravity along with having the mentioned restricted range of motion. I would have love to seen Leben pull off a triangle and choked out a wrestler. Up for discussion if anyone wants to talk about it, if you favor the ring or the cage. I'm not much of a fan of the cage because a good wrestler can keep you pinned there. I'm a fan of Pride over UFC though so I'm a little biased. Any news on who's going to be in the Pride MW tourney? I'll see if I can come up with a dream tourney list

alright Joe I'll bite. based on your "dream" tag on this and considering weight differences I will give you my picks. Since most of the fighters you named fight in pride I will also base my decisions on fighting in a ring.
1) silva-vov I would pick igor in this one. outside of cro-cop Igor has the punching power to stop vandy. It would be a stand up war with igor stopping him in the 1st
2) rampage-randy of course RANDY superior wrestler doesn't need the cage to hold someone down, getting better and better in his striking. he has a heart that you can't teach, also never been knocked out in his entire career
3)ninja-yoshida yoshida no particular reason except went the distance with vandy and I never took a liking to ninja
4)liddell-royce good match up I would have to go with chuck, great take down defense, great stand up, ability to get up fast after being taken down. chuck by KO
5) sak- vitor already happened in real life with sak winning. I don't see a different outcome. sak may have lost a step or two but, still eeks out a JD over belfort
6)busta-allistair Busta by sub. Busta has a skill of adapting to his competition. I say busta catches ali early and pulls the victory by arm bar
7) renzo-arona biased because renzo was a great guy to me when I was in NYC. reality both accomplished on the ground, stand up edge to renzo I will officially say split dec Renzo
8) my boy tito vs the ronin Tito with out a doubt GNP baby first round. too much power for carlos who is a master of subs. although no elbows under pride rules tito would adapt and use his hands and size to give carlos the worst beating of his career
now back to reality...chuck or randy in the rematch?

I used to be reality into fighting/wrestling but as i got a little older and less active the idea of people beating me in the head isnt too appealing. Though i do miss my friends that would give me that exercise. I only saw that one episode. From what i hear about the water thing Josh needed his butt knocked out, i dont disagree with that at all. But from the one episode i saw Chris was presenting himself very well. Though i do believe Josh presented himself as scared and intimidated. When they were on the ground there were so many times and positions that where open to both of them at different times and neither even bothered to make the moves. As far as fighting Josh SUCKS! He looked like he was swinging like a girl, probably why he dont fight. I would probly look as dumb though. And to compare Chris to his mouth he sucked to. Thats all i was saying. Id love to watch it more but by the time i think about turning on the tv its over.

I'm sorry John, but Royce Gracie would win against liddell. He never lost, nor did he ever come close to losing in his career.

Tony,tony tony,
My good man, check royces fight record at sherdog.com he has lost.
He lost in the ufc after Kimo put a beating on him he still won and came back in for the next fight and threw in the towel against harold howard.
he lost to sakaruba in pride and he lost to yoshida in their first fight in pride.
The sport has evolved since royce won the first two UFC and then the fourth.
Liddell would hand him such a beating he would be carried out on a strecher.

Thanks for your reply John, great read on your pics. Care to do the second round? I have a lot more MMA knowledge than the average person but not enough to say I'm a guru. My pick for Chuck vs Randy: Same outcome as the first time, with Randy being slightly more dominant. I love Chuck but Randy is just a machine. Go Captain America! PS: Royce is good but does have losses, but sense Yoshida, what has he done, tap Akibono? Rutten vs Royce in a dream match. Igor Randy Hideo Chuck Kazushi Alister Renzo Tito

2nd round igor-randy randy by ref stoppage. igor cant stop randys takedown, randy can hold anyone down, ring or cage. chuck-yoshida tough one to call, instinct says chuck by dec. tough match but I think chuck could score from his feet, but not enough to stop the fight sak-overeem sak by annoying tactics he is very skillful and can pull off some amazing moves renzo-tito I hate to say it but once again Tito. I have rolled with tito and know how strong he is. tito by G-N-P Dream match up.....Bas-v- Rickson What were your picks on your match ups joe?

Wait, let me get this strait. Your saying he's out of date with his fighting, but you take claim to his name to be known as a "Guru." I'm sorry, but that's a funny irony to me.

Tony, I never said Royce was out of date or that I disliked him. He is a main reason that the sport is where it is. I said chuck liddell would beat him in a fight.
Royce Gracie is awesome, but since everyone now studies gracie jujitsu he is less likely to submit people. when the ufc first started people had one style( karate, kickboxing, wrestling,jj) now they cross train that's where the name Mixed Martial Arts comes from.
