Last night my wife's aunt had a neighbor knocking on her door. (they happen to be my neighbor as well) They proceeded to yell at her because her dog killed their black cat. The cat was in my wife's aunts yard, and has been seen in there tormenting the dog before. They were demanding the dog be put to sleep or they would call the authorities and have it put down. Now this same cat has pissed on my grill cover, walks on our cars with muddy paws and is all the time teasing fenced in dogs on our street, heck I wanted to give the dog a treat. Now Cooper (the dog) is a beautiful blue-tick hound. He is wonderful with kids and all the neighbors, except for them, love this dog and has never harmed any kids or humans, and we have a ton of little ones in my wife's family and our street who play with it all the time. So here are my questions:
1) Should my wife's aunt be forced to put her dog down?
2) Which do you prefer in general, dogs or cats, and why?
I personally am a dog lover, and wish I had a place big enough for a Great Daine. Cats get on my nerves. You can't really play with a cat, walk a cat, or take them places like dogs.

1) No
2) Dogs - they are more affectionate and seem to appreciate the love and care you've given them. Cats are standoffish and unappreciative.

1) NO. Cat owners have to take responsibility for their cats. As long as the dog was in his own yard, that cat had no business being there. My brother used to have a Chinese guard dog (not sure of the breed) His niece let her rabbit go near the dog. The dog swallowed the rabbit whole (something like that) The dog loved all people because all the people it was exposed to treated it very well. But any animals outside of my brothers other dogs, were a snack for that dog. They bought his niece another rabbit and told her to keep it away from the dogs.
2) I love cats because they are affectionate and appreciative, always waiting at the door for us when we go out, etc. They are house cats. They stay inside like the vets tell you to do. They are cleaner than humans and you never have to bathe them. Dogs smell up the house (I dated girls with dogs). You have to walk them and bathe them. The bigger dogs are potentially dangerous. My brother only has dogs, but has 100 or so acres for them to play. They are well socialized because he always has large gatherings at his house and the dogs are always with strangers. They love all people. Funny how I love cats and my brother loves dogs.

1. No. 2. Cats, with my and my wife's schedule I would be coming home to mountains of poo through my house if I had a dog. If we go on a trip(AAA nationals I'll use as an example) for a couple of days I know that I don't need to find a sitter, and more importanly no poo all through my house when I get home. It's easier to empty a litter pan(really easy with an automatic one) than tracking though the yard looking for poo. I think cats are cleaner. JMO

No, Ron hit it on the head!! The lady is out of line and needs to control her animals. Which we all know you can't control a cat. We have 2 dogs, Male Chow, Chinese guard dog, female Saint Bernard, and 3 BARN cats, great mousers. Our dogs are outside doing their job, the cats are even further outside doing theirs. I hate cats in peoples house, feet in litter box, then their counters. I used to raise pit bulls, I love that breed.

The dog in question shouldn't be punished for the inability of someone to train/control their cat. We have 4 cats. They are easily trained/controlled; but, you don't do so the way you do with dogs. They offer affection that goes beyond a tongue in the face... They don't make TOO MUCH NOISE when a car or postman goes by. They don't require you to stop what you're doing in order for them to relieve themselves in the backyard, which requires yet more disgusting work. Dogs are too dependent/clingy for my tastes, or their tempers are generally not as easily trained. Cats are as independent as you treat them. They do cool acrobatics. They kill small animals efficiently, and then clean up by eating the carcass. And, like Anthony said, you can go away for a few days, and they're totally self-sufficient.

Cat lovers typically don't like dogs in houses. Dog lovers typically don't like cats in houses.
On average, children that are brought up in houses with cats and/ or dogs grow up healthier than those that aren't.

One of the things I can't help but conclude, that its not the animal its the owner.
Just like Mark said that Pit bulls are a great bread, but so many people don't raise them properly. My sister has had a pit for years and now a 3 year old daughter, and that dog has been around her and her little friends all the time, and never one incident, and is a great pet, but the cocker spaniel down the street has bitten at least 3 kids, go figure.
Also the same goes for cats, its how you train them and treat them I guess, I have just never been a cat person.
