This was the first time at this exercise. My bud/trainer at the gym told me to give it a try. He told me it was good but he is my bud. How much was smoke or was it a good pull? It was fun!

Ya Ryan I never worked my legs at all. My Trainer told me that it will give me power at the table. So we will see. But I can say it was fun. My next pull will be 455 lbs. Kettle bells are next ;D

that is great beginning imo. deadlifts will help in aw by improving grip strength and spine extension strength [ very helpful for backpressure]

I haven't done dead lifts since high school! I have hurt my back too many times to try it again, unfortunately......From what I remember though form is everything and it only takes 1 time to really F yourself up doing deads!!

Russ...
405 is a GREAT dead lift for anyone. no question...not BS'n ya. especially the first time tryin the movement. good job bro!
just be very careful. deadlifts (just like every other excercise) are all about using the the proper form/muscle groups when performing the lift. deadlifts are also one of the best indicator for over all athleticism and body strength/power. they utilize a wide variety of muscle groups all over the entire body. just make sure especially in the beginng that you have someone coach you on proper technique and form...and not just how much you can pull up.....especailly if you plan on tryin to set personal best lifts in the future. a good foundation will allw you you to progree faster, farther and injury free in the long run. if you f*ck your back up you be sorry....thats me speakin from experience.
ask yourself whats more impressive? a 700 pound shirted BP??? or a 900 pound raw deadlift??? IMO...the deadlift hands down.

405 is great for first time no doubt! There is no way your form was a 100% and thats a good thing. You prolly will slam that 455 in no time

How much do you put up my friend? myself ,as many others pointed out ,is always a little hesitant to do heavy dead lifts. i always have a fear that i may injure my back if i am not able to control the weight . what i do is [ after warming up ,] 100 kg [two 44pounds disc on both sides] and go for 8-10 reps and do 5 sets with reducing weights. and then 60kg ''good mornings'' for reps.. and some straight leg dead lifts [keeping knee straight and weights not going too low to ground] thick bar can give you better finger power.

I have been training for 15 years and just hit 500 lb. (with straps)on my deadlift, my bodyweight: 198lbs. I was stuck on 495 for about a year and a half and finally pushed myself over the hump.
If you keep sneaking those 21/2 pounders on the bar, and don't do the lift too damn often, your numbers will steadily climb. It took me about 12 years to go from 405 to 500.
Stick with 3 sets of 10 for the next 4-6 weeks taking 7-10 days off between deadlifting sessions. This will give you time to get good at the movement. Alternating squats and deadlifts week to week is also an effective way to increase your lower body strength.
In the coming months, start reading some powerlifting magazines and coming up with with some heavy duty routines and you should hit 500 in no time... Hopefully quicker than I did.
