A thread for shooting enthusiasts. What is your favorite gun and why? It' a toss up between a Banelli M-4 and an AR-15. Both are solid reliable firearms that can adapt to many situations. Both a very smooth and user friendly. Those would have to be my top picks.

FN 57 is a wicked pistol. It's like a scaled down 223 round for a pistol.

Hk sl8-1(civilian model of german army g36),govt model 1911,glock 22 in .40 or .357 sig, on a side note I think that glock pistols are the most reliable pistol that the average joe can buy,I've had multiple glocks and put tens of thousands of rounds through them and have never had one jam or not go bang!

Also its hard to vote on the poll because in a fight a pistol is a last line of defense,or something you use to stay alive long enough to get to your rifle:)

It's old school by now, but the best weapon I've ever used is the HK MP5. Whether it is set to Select or Full Auto it is always controllable. Even suppressed the POI doesn't change and the balance is perfect. If there's a finer machine I've never held it.
I never cared much for the M16 or it's variants. Any rifle that incorporates a forward-assist because feed jams are normal has to lose points. They hold okay out to several hundred meters on select but full auto is totally useless unless you are sweeping.
I love the M1A / M14. You can make real shooters out of these. The military brought them back for good reason.
For daily stuff, I love my Smith 5906 like a child. It's not sexy and it's ultra basic. It's fairly accurate, more than accurate enough for a defensive gun. But in 8000 rounds it has NEVER jammed, misfired, or failed to feed. I have run it wet, run it dirty, run it with no oil... I can't make it fail. That's as high praise as I can give any gun.
For fun I build .22 rifles. I have a .22 that will hold 1MOA at 100 yards. (Under perfect conditions.) it will hold 3/8 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards off a bipod.
I built a little 10/22 that will shoot keyholes at 50 yards but it opens up to 1-1/2 inch at 100 yds. The carbon fiber barrel isn't stiff enough for long distance stuff. It gets warm and begins to open up. But it's loads of fun.
I've had lots of guns, but I enjoy the crap out of .22s. You can shoot all day long for peanuts. And it's funny to go to the range and shoot groups equal to the guy in the next lane who has two grand sunk into a big bore.
My next project will be a .308 bolt rifle. I like .308 for many reasons. Here on the east coast there us nowhere to shoot past 1000 yards. If I lived out in the western desert I'd go .338 Lapua.

Glock 22, it's served me well over the last 15 years. It's never jammed and is very accurate.

I recently bought my first handgun. I have shot about 12 different kinds but so far the one I got has been the one I like the most. I got a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Champion Operator. Shoots great and the recoil isn't bad at all being a 4" barrel either. Very accurate and has had no FTF, FTE, ect....... I also fired a Kimber Ultra Carry the other day it was probably the one I have liked 2nd to the one I bought. The Glocks I have shot are very accurate too. But they seemed to have some FTF problems. Coulda just been the magazines being used though.

Coulda just been the magazines being used though. *Very* nice pistol, Johnny. The new Springfield Armory 1911s are awesome. I had a handbuilt 1911 bullseye pistol for years, but it took about about a thousand bucks to make it shoot like it did. I had .001" slide to frame clearance which made it super accurate but it could only go 100 rounds before it became a jam-o-matic. This was common for competition guns but only a moron would carry a gun like that for defense. The Kimbers and the Springfields are shooting one hole out of the box with match ammo and they don't lock up tight when they get dirty. Real marvels of engineering. I'm a .45ACP freak! My favorite pistol round. You can tailor a .45 round for anything from extreme accuracy to extreme knockdown. And like you said, a 4" bbl with at least 17lbs recoil spring makes it a joy to shoot. Obviously you probably want a 19lb spring if you shoot 230gr hardball all day. But the point is that a 1911 was born to be customized. John Browning got a whole lot right for a guy designing guns 100 years ago. Dumping the barrel swivel loop for the Browning breech lockup made them perfect. As to Glock misfeeds, I've only heard that on a very few calibers. The 10mm is notorious for poor feeding regardless of pistol type. It's just too long and straight for an autoloader. Just like when the Desert Eagle .357 came out. .357 just isn't a good round for an autoloader. Being gas operated, the DE wouldn't cycle with standard loads so you had to run +P in them to get the slide to recoil far enough to pick up the next round. And just like the 10mm, the sidewall is just too long and straight to make that necessary up-and-forward transition into the chamber with any reliablility. I'm sure any pistol would benefit from a polished feed ramp, too. Production guns aren't perfect off the shelf and they usually rely on a very conical bullet profile such that they begin to misfeed when you run semi-wadcutter profiles like a lot of the frangible defensive loads. People tend to look down on 9mm these days, and there's some justification for that, but as far as reliability goes there was never a better bullet design for an autoloading pistol. When it comes to life and death there's just something to be said for having a gun that always goes 'bang' when you expect it to.

No law enforcement or military background,i just love shooting, and was raised to love my country, call me a patriot but I believe its every americans duty to protect this country, and respect all of our military veterans. My father is a viet nam vet and raised us to be proud to be american, all of our vets have my utmost gratitude,if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have all of the rights that most people take for granted every day!!!
