Simon,Don't insult the sport of boxing by comparing it to Pro Wrestling. If you have ever fought in the ring or even spared for that matter you wouldn't compare the sport to the staged event. The point is the calls that are made are subject to the referee's interpretation of the foul being intentional or not. All sports that have referee's are subjected to that. As are most sports filled with people who look for ways to bend the rules in order to win. Like it or not that will never change. I do agree with you on several points the main one being it would be great if everyone would just grip up and pull!!!
I love the sport, fought from mighty mites up to open amateurs and even contemplated turning pro, been in the ring sparring with some good ones in my time. Not a fan of what has been done to the pro ranks, they have taken something great an noble and corrupted it, but I still love the sport.
On the contrary things can change if we have the balls to make it happen, people who sit back and think it is fine as it is simply because it seems too large to fix and or it suits them, really have no vision and cannot see past their own selfish version of this sport, those are the people that cannot innovate, ("non learning" for you Todd), those are the people that think it is better to wallow in this sport as it is than dare to try and make it what it could be.
I agree it would be great if people would just grip like true athletes and win or lose based upon who is better, but until we alter the sport to curb those that do not, it will just continue to get worse.
I am for a whole gambit of rule and process changes that would put an end to these people trying to bend the rules all the time, not only will that nonsense stop but I think it can improve the perception of the sport, again maybe not this strap start but there are certainly ways to make this sport better.
