I see a big difference between novice, amateur, open, and pro, especially which coast your on. There really isn't an amateur on the east coast, just open and novice.
Leonard Harkless gives the best explanation/distinction I've heard.

As a Novice puller right now, I think it is ridiculous to pull Novice if you have been pulling for 7+ years, step up and go pro man. If you are even at the same table, seriously, in a tourney with John Brzenk then you have no business pulling any novice classes. If a novice wants to step up to a pro class thats one thing, but you should not step down.

I am an Amateur. Most of the tournies I have gone to have only had open classes. I have placed in every amateur tournie I have been at except ohio state. Open class is a different story, I have only placed once but I have never gone 2 and out.

I am a novice/amature puller, but in local events I might pull novice and pro, just for fun. One day i'll be pulling with the pros

well, i believe that one match, or one tournament is not enough to base ones classification and skill level upon. i pulled the open in my second tournament jst 2 c where i was. on that day i won the novice, and i beat a former world champion and a few other good pullers in the open taking third. afterward people told me i should in no way be pulling the novice class although i was (or so i thought) clearly a novice having never even won a tournament in any class.
can someone clarify what categorizes you as amatuer or pro?
i am thinkin bout not pullign in the novice class in my next tournament. if i do we will c how things shape up. i dnt mind losing so its not like i am trying to sandbag. i want to pull with the best around cus that is the only way to learn
for me, pulling with people that you can easily beat stunts your growth as an armwrestler. i found this out early on. so i would say if you wanna be a pro train with a pro or at least someone who can beat you as often as you beat them. but that is pretty obvious i think.

I understand that this is a predominately professional message board with alot of seasoned pullers, however I was just wondering who all on this board considers themselves a novice/amateur puller? and also who are the best up and coming non-pros in everyones region? I'm a Novice.

It does not mater what position you are pulling in if you can hold Brzenk for any lenght of time you should not be pulling in the amature and especially not in the novice

In my opinion, and the way it has been explained to me, there is a huge difference between amateur and novice.
Novice is for beginners. Amateur is someone who has not accepted prize money or its equivalent. I've seen some really good pullers compete as an amateur in the last several years: Barbosa, Phipps, McClary, Constantino, Wabuda, Partington also all of the Armenian guys that train with Vagzden.
Thanks Steve.

So you will be an amateur until you get paid?
