Hi Pete. Are you talking about the whole precess of getting grips then if a slip happens use straps. If that is it then I prefer to let the puller attempt to get their own grip for 30 sec, then put them in ref grip. If they slip then put them in the straps and continue to apply referee grip before GO. If you are talking about something new to be fair and save time I would like to see the pullers start in ref's grip then if they slip put them in straps and apply the referee's grip with GO as soon as the grip is set.

Just start every match in a hook. Saves set up time & you can pretty much throw the strap away.

Pete I'd like to be clear on this before I answer. Do you mean going straight into a ref's grip on your first option?
I assume you're looking for a way to cut down all the time it takes for some guys to set up and run your tournaments faster.

Just start every match in a hook. Saves set up time & you can pretty much throw the strap away. That won't always work, as a good toproller can often pull out of of a hook. It has been tried before. In addidtion for newer pullers it gives a distinct advantage to one type of puller. As far as the set grip goes I like to have the opportunity to grip up first. I wouldn't mind it the other way with good ref who doesn't foul you for blinking once you set There is the real weakness of the set grip as fouls are called IMO for too little movement. I would like to see a warning for movement in the set grip just like a false start the first time then fouls after that. It is no good for the sport as a spectator or competitor to have wins on fouls

Not exactly sure what your question is. But I think pullers should first try to get their own grip before a Set Grip. But I also think Every slip should go to the straps no matter where or why. ALL SLIPS GO TO STRAPS

Also unclear on the exact question but I will say if you started every match in the straps, you would need far fewer refs grips because the straps force pretty even grips... I said this before tell me how many times you have seen a set up where two athletes got the refs grip only after they could not setup in the strap.. Agree with all slips go to a strap, sure I admit that bailing out before you get pinned happens and is pretty dodgy. but I would say this only because there are so many reasons why the dynamic of the hands caused a slip at some point in the match, most times it takes two to slip. I got two intentional slip fouls at the worlds, one I was on my winning side of the table and I was forced this way because of the rip away grip of my opponent, and the other was pretty up and down where my opponent worked for a thumb lock, dropping my fingers off of his hand then he let go, foul to me. I would have been thrilled with a straight palm to palm grip with both of them, they would have gotten destroyed.

Now if the match goes rt into a hook then from there say i took his hand in hook and he flaps his wrist and a slip happens its a loss...only due to he went into a hook got top rolled and he bailed its a loss...every match i pulled with micheal todd rt hand he bailed after we hook and i took his hand...one ref says winner and one said strap....i feel you slip on the fact your gonna lose and it is your only chance to win by bailing ...so if its a hook match then a slip happens its the guys loss that got top rolled....
