I think the Cleve/John match that quote is referring to is the 1993 Yukon Jack finals. I think the Rich/John match may have been at the 1993 Petaluma Worlds.

only John can answer this question as he is the ONLY ARMWRESTLER who has pulled all of these guys. Berfore reading the rest of the thread, I'm guessing John would pick Lupkes.

@tomasz: the right spelling of the Lithuanian girl's name is: .....Eglė Vaitkutė bob I agree with you cause I've read somewhere that John has always thought that in matter of pure strength on table Lupkes is the strongest he ever felt. @all: I think the reply by John is the real meter..... too many variables involved in these conjectures... Shape, Period (not the same years for all), weights classes... ecc... I agree with Engin that Karaev is not the best ever... and I'm pretty sure many of us are thinking that Voevoda is not the best ever too, due to the fact he wasn't at the top for many years like Lupkes or Dean were at their time. IMO Alexey is the most powerful of all times but his short time in the sport plays against him in this chart.

Here John says Alexey Voevoda from 2004 is probably the strongest armwrestler ever, with Lupkes being a close 2nd. Very beginning of video.

Bicio, I agree that Voevoda would probably be considered the strongest superheavy of all time, but it is hard to crown him the best because of his lack of time at the top. Though his ability to compete at an elite level in sooo many different sports is super impressive. In terms of longevity, who would be the best superheavy? BTW,(I noticed your sig at the bottom of your posts) your Italian is better than mine I am sure. When my grandmother (from Sicily) used to yell at me (and my brother) in Italian and try to hit us with a broom it would have been nice to understand what she was saying.

It wouldn’t be fair for me to even guess who would win if we could combine time and everyone could come in at their very best shape of their lives. Still To many unknown variables.
Yes, the names mentioned are the Giants that I remember growing up. Another guy that could be in this mix would be Scott Norton … during the Over The Top year 1986 ..he was scary strong. Yes, Richard Lupkas was huge raw power …and it was very difficult to get any natural Armwrestling angles on him. Gary Goodridge was very powerful in 96 97 … but was still limited by his build ..smaller hand that could be used against him. Cleve Dean was around for a long time before my time. so it’s impossible for me to gauge his best ability. But later I discovered that his strength was in his HUGE hand size and that his arm once brought to wrist to wrist was beatable. I don’t have any serious experience with Alexey… only pulling him in 2004 and not being in the greatest condition. But it would seem his huge strength is in his hand and rotation, and he maybe defeated by a BIG strong Norton or Lupkas if forced into a Hook.
The current best heavyweight in my mind isn’t a scary strong guy with a blast your arm off power …BUT he still may have the long build to control and strangle the life out of all the past best heavyweights. Devon should be part of this list. If we are talking very best at one point in time.
These 6 guys are the ones that stick in my head through the years at being the Current best in the World at their peaks.

Hi John I'm a fan of yours and really appreciate what you have been to this sport. I'm relatively new to armwrestling by comparison of yourself, so i can only go by what I've read and heard. Alot of this is all based on opinion so here's mine. You are the best of all time. And i say this because of the longevity of your performance and in so many different weight classes. In 2004 when you pulled Alexey, outside of you not being in your best pulling shape due to injuries you came to Zloty light( 209 ) and pulled a very stout class. I think if you would have been healthy, also at your heavy pulling weight (230+) and only pulled heavies that day, the outcome would have been different. I think you would have beat Alexey. Just my opinion.

and pulled a very stout class. i agree all except this part being used as one of the reasons.if one is good enough to beat Voevoda then -95kg should not be a stout class for him.because anyone who has problem with Taras can not have chance against Voevoda on the same day. also John did not have problem in his class,he had the war against Taras in the overalls.he beat Taras and Ron without problems in 95kg class. Voevoda's weight class (supers) was surely tougher; Category: Senior Men Right +95kg 1.Voevoda, Alexey (RUSSIA) 2. Bagent, Travis (USA) 3. Girdner, Matt (USA) 4. Semerenko, Alexey (UKRAINE) 5. Spusta, Peter (SLOVAKIA) 6. Kokoev, Ruslan (RUSSIA) 7. Tomsons, Normunds (LATVIA) 8.Sharkov, Andrey (UKRAINE) 9.Glowacki, Slawomir (POLAND) 10.Kujala, Petri (FINLAND) 11.Piechowiak, Wojciech (POLAND) 12.Mikelionis, Vydas (LITHUANIA) 13.Kokkare, Tommy (SWEDEN) 14.Wyszynski, Sebastian (POLAND) but again,i agree about John being light and injured at that time.

Thats my point. Healthy and heavy I think he would have had no problem with the 95kg's or Taras for that matter. Thus making him a totaly different and stonger contender in Alexey's class. I would have liked to have seen this match under these different conditions. There again jmo.

To nominate "the best super heavy weight ever" seems to cause problems. If only John wasn't such a skinny man and THE GIANT KILLER it would be so much easier.
