In Christianity, we believe that Jesus death on the cross atones for our sins. With that in mind.....
In the Muslim faith, how do you atone for sins?
What is the penalty for sin?
What must you do to get into Heaven?
Who goes to Heaven and who does not?

hi Rick,
in Islam there is no such deal as atoning the sins to guarantee the heaven because the mercy of GOD is the key for heaven.but faith in one and only GOD (not three) is the most important thing same as Moses and Jesus mentioned;
"Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one," Deuteronomy 6:4.
MARK 12:29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God ,the Lord is one."
"GOD forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with GOD is to devise a sin most heinous indeed. (The Noble Quran, 4:48)."
Noble Quran 3:64 Say :"O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but GOD, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides GOD. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are "Muslims."
"They do blaspheme who say: 'GOD is Christ the son of Mary.' But said Christ: 'O Children of Israel! Worship GOD, my Lord and your Lord.' Whoever joins other gods with GOD - GOD will forbid him the Garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrongdoers be no one to help. (The Holy Quran, 5:72)"
"He is the First and the Last, the Evident and the Hidden: and He has full knowledge of all things. (The Noble Quran, 57:3)"
"But it is to GOD that the end and the beginning (of all things) belong. (The Noble Quran, 53:25)"

maybe we can say that there are some acts to atone our sins(but heaven is possible with the mercy of GOD);
Noble Verse 13:22 "Those who patiently persevere, seeking the countenance of their Lord; establish regular prayers; spend out of (the gifts) We have bestowed for their sustenance, secretly and openly; and turn off evil with good: for such there is the final attainment of the (Eternal) Home."
Noble Verse 23:96 "Repel evil with that which is best: We are Well-acquainted with the things they say."
Noble Verse 41:34 "Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with that is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!."
Noble Verse 28:54 "Twice will they be given their reward, for that they have persevered, that they avert evil with good, and that they spend (in charity) out of what We have given them."
"It is part of the Mercy of GOD that thou dost deal gently with them. Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (their faults), and ask for (GOD's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast taken a decision, put thy trust in GOD. For GOD loves those who put their trust (in Him). (The Noble Quran, 3:159)"
"Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for GOD loves those who do good. (The Noble Quran, 3:134)"
"Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; but turn away from the ignorant. (The Noble Quran, 7:199)"
"Say to My servants that they should (only) say those things that are best: for Satan doth sow dissensions among them: for Satan is to man an avowed enemy. (The Noble Quran, 17:53)"
"And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: 'To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we seek not the ignorant.' (The Noble Quran, 28:55)"

GOD orders us to deal peacefully with anyone who deals peacefully;
"GOD forbids you not, With regard to those who Fight you not for (your) Faith Nor drive you out Of your homes, From dealing kindly and justly With them: For GOD loveth Those who are just. (The Noble Quran, 60:8)"
Noble Verse 4:86 "When a (courteous) greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy. GOD takes careful account of all things."
there are so many orders to follow to be a better person whom GOD will be pleased;
Noble Verse 17:37 "Nor walk on the earth with insolence: for thou can not rend the earth asunder, nor reach the mountains in height."
"And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for God loveth not any arrogant boaster. (The Noble Quran, 31:18)"
"O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong. (The Noble Quran, 49:11)"
to forgive a wrong doing receives a reward from GOD;
Noble Verse 42:40 "The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree): but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from GOD: for (GOD) Loveth not those who do wrong."

we are human and we are created weak to need the mercy of GOD.in Islam no one can claim to say that he-she deserved heaven because we can not worship to thank which is enough for the things that GOD gave us;
We created Man from a drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him: So We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and Sight. We showed him the Way: whether he be grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will). (Al-Insan, 2-3)
And remember! Your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If you are grateful, I will add more (favors) unto you; But if you show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed." (Abraham, 7)
That is (the Bounty) whereof GOD gives Glad Tidings to His Servants who believe and do righteous deeds. Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin." And if any one earns any good, We shall give him an increase of good in respect thereof: for GOD is Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (service). (Ash-Shura, 23)
"If you would count up the favors of GOD, never would you be able to number them: for GOD is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Al-Nahl, 18)
We sent Moses with Our signs (and the command). "Bring out thy people from the depths of darkness into light, and teach them to remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative. (Ibrahim, 5)
(GOD) said: "O Moses! I have chosen you above (other) men, by the mission I (have given you ) and the words I (have spoken to you): take then the (revelation) which I give you, and be of those who give thanks." (Al-Araf, 144)

we believe that GOD is able to know,hear and accept us directly;
"When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way. (The Noble Quran, 2:186)"
Jesus also said that the way to go to heaven is by doing the will of GOD;
..... Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father (my GOD) who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord,' did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' (Matthew 7:13-14, 7:21-23)"
we believe that to every nation at least one messenger was sent to guide and warn them;
"To every people (was sent) an apostle: when their apostle comes (before them), the matter will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged. (The Noble Quran, 10:47)"
we all will face the good and bad deeds of ours on the judgement day;
"Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. (The Noble Quran, 99:7-8)"

but the most important is the intention when we do good things;
"Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, And have in their minds No favour from anyone For which a reward Is expected in return, But only the desire To seek for the Countenance Of their Lord Most High; And soon will they Attain (complete) satisfaction. (The Noble Quran, 92:18-21)"
"Those who spend their substance in the cause of God, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury,-for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. (The Noble Quran, 2:262)"
"O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in God nor in the Last Day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And God guideth not those who reject faith. And the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please God and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it. God seeth well whatever ye do. (The Noble Quran, 2:264-265)"
"And whatever ye spend in charity or devotion, be sure God knows it all. But the wrong-doers have no helpers. (The Noble Quran, 2:270)"
"Do not despair of God's mercy; He will forgive you of all your sins".Qur'an (39:53).
"And He wishes to forgive you" Qur'an (4:146).
How to repent?
For repentance to be accepted by GOD, one should go through these four stages:
1- Stop the sin. 2- Regretting deeply and truly for the sin you committed. 3- Return to GOD for forgiveness. 4- Strong intention never to return to that same sin again.

GRATEFULNESS to parents is also very important;
Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: My Lord! Bestow on them thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood. (17:23)
...Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming. But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration), and follow the way of those who turn to me (in love): in the end the return of you all is to Me, then will I inform you of what you did (31:15)
Serve God, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For God loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious;- (4:36)
our Prophet Muhammad said about the major sins. He (Mohammed) observed: Associating anyone with God, disobedience to parents, killing a person and false utterance.
our prophet was asked;
"Which deed is the dearest to God?
He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times."
"What is the next (in goodness)?"
He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents"
another saying by him (he means pleasing the mother is one of the keys to enter paradise);
"Paradise is at the feet of the mothers"
in short,you need to have faith in GOD and in HIS messages to be part of this qualification for heaven but you also need to do your best with an honest intention as James mentioned in Bible;
14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. 19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.
20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

the intention is very important in Islam as our prophet said;
"Actions are (judged) by motives, so each man will have what he intended."
the first part of the Quran (al-Fatiha) is the heart of the faith;
With the name of Almighty GOD the beneficent and most merciful..
in the name of The Most Affectionate, the Merciful
All praise unto GOD, Lord of all the worlds
The most Affectionate, The Merciful
Master of the Day of Requital
We worship You alone, and beg You alone for help
Guide us in the straight path
The path of those whom You have favoured
Not of those who have earned Your anger and nor of those who have gone astray.

AND THE FINALLY THE KEY TO THE PARADISE,MERCY OF GOD;
as i mentioned before that we can not pay GOD enough for what HE has done for us,so HIS mercy is the key for entering paradise.we all are sinners and HIS mercy is the way to forgive our sins;
Now if God were to take men [at once] to task for whatever [wrong] they commit [on earth], He would not leave a single living creature upon its surface. However, He grants them respite for a term set [by Him]: but when their term comes to an end - then, verily, [they come to know that] God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His servants".35-45
“those who avoid major sins and acts of indecencies and when they are angry they forgive.” (42:37)
our prophet said;
'GOD will not be Merciful to those who are not Merciful to mankind'
"My mercy has encompassed every thing." (Al-A'raf:56)
GOD said;
"Son of Adam! If your sins were to reach the limits of the sky, and then you seek My forgiveness, I shall forgive you, and I do not care. Son of Adam! If you will bring sins equal in volume to the earth and then you meet Me (on the day of Judgment) in the state that you would not have suggested partners unto Me, I shall give you in return forgiveness equal to the volume of the earth."
someone asked to our prophet about the mercy of GOD.our prophet gave an example;
"When GOD created the heavens and the earth, he created one hundred mercies, each one can cover what is between the earth and the heaven. He allocated to the earth only one, with which the mother is compassionate with her child; the beast and the bird are compassionate with their babies. When the Day of Judgment comes, GOD will complete His mercy."
"…Those who repent and believe, and do righteous deeds, for those, Allah will change their sins into good deeds…"
"…Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds…"
"GOD ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write). If someone intends to do a good deed and he dose not do it, then GOD will write for him a full good deed; and if he intends to do a good deed and actually did it, then Allah will write for him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times to many more times. And If someone intends to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then GOD will write for him a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intends to do a bad deed and actually did it, then GOD will write for him one bad deed."
Also, the mercy of GOD is the reason that GOD sends His believers to Paradise on the Day of Judgment. The prophet said: "None of you will enter Paradise with his deeds", They said: "Not even you, oh messenger of GOD?!", He said: "Not even me unless GOD bestows His mercy upon me."
The prophet said to his companions, "Do you think that A mother would throw her baby in the fire?" They replied, "No, if she has the power not to throw him-her in the fire." The prophet said, "GOD is more merciful to His servants than A mother to her baby."
prophet said, "If a disbeliever knows of all the mercy which is in the hand of GOD, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise…"
"Except such as repent and believe and do good, these shall enter the Garden, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly in any way." [19:60]
"Say: 'O my Servants who Have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of GOD: for GOD forgives all sins for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (The Noble Quran, 39:53)"

Engin,
Seriously dude it was a simple question that required a simple answer. You went off on a tangent that had nothing really to do with the question then posted the entire Quran.
Noone is going to read all that bro.
Not trying to be disrespectful. I'm just suggesting you keep your responses short and to the point.

hi Ryan,
i had to answer with the sources to explain the Muslim view.all the answers had something to do with the point as i am the one who is explaining the point which may not be as you expected but that is the answer.you wrote "no one is gonna read all that",but the one who wants to learn will read and i am not bothered if people, who does not want to learn,does not read.once you read you can understand the point.i can not represant the faith in an incomplete way as it is an important responsibility.
but if you want to know the shortest answer for the salvation,then it is the MERCY of GOD.

my last post on page 1. is the way for the heaven but the earlier posts were to explain who can receive the mercy of GOD.it requires faith in GOD and what came from Him,it requires an honest repentance followed by the good works.
