Luck
Luck is the intersection of preparedness and oppurtunity Whithout preparedness oppurtunity means nothing whithout oppurtunity preparedness means nothing Christopher Myers p.s. people who call other people lucky are usually envious or jelous...they usually never realize that they are not trying to prepare themselves or not placing themselves in oppurtunity's way

I don’t know why my view count keeps getting erased? It was up to 1300 then wiped out then it was up to 500 then wiped out then it was up to 150 I figure it will wiped out at around 75 this time. Well I am glad that I am not locked out this time. For those of you who do not know me personally, I own two fairly large Goodyear dealerships and I do an extensive amount of Advertising. I run a full page ad just about every week in our local newspaper. Whenever I was overwhelmed with something to say I used it as a forum to speak my mind ( kind of like this thread ) they are not poetry but they should make you feel something or at least think. I hope you enjoy them and I hope you post your opinions Christopher Myers

My name is Christopher Myers and I am the owner of Jamaica Tire and Auto Service, Inc. I advertise here on a weekly basis. I would like to use this advertisement as a forum for sharing my feelings with my customers and community. To start, I as well as all of our employees would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the families of our fallen Americans who were tragically killed on September 11, 2001. We would also like to offer praise for the NYC Police and Firefighters, as well as all of the Emergency Workers who risked and gave their lives for the sake of saving others. They are truly HEROS. I would also like to thank all of the city and state officials like Mayor Guliani and Governor Pataki for their unwavering dedication to duty. Mayor Guliani, I believe has done an above and beyond the call of duty, job not for the hope of election votes, he is exempt from that. But instead as a Good Man, Good Mayor, Good New Yorker and especially a Good American. Governor Pataki’s eloquent words were sincerely comforting in a time of need and very confidence inspiring. There are no words of thanks that can truly be worthy for the thousands of people who volunteered to help in the rescue operation. I would like to say that I had always considered myself worldly and a person who had a decent understanding of life. I was born in NYC and the day after I was born my father left for Vietnam to serve as a fighter helicopter pilot. He served our country valiantly and was rewarded for heroism. I was always proud of that, when I was a child as well as today. After serving in Vietnam my father continued to serve in the Armed Forces as a flight instructor and we traveled to and lived in many states of America, as well as other countries. I even lived in Iran for two years from 1975-1977. We left shortly before the embassy take over. I was born in a middle class neighborhood, which was predominantly white. I spent time in the southern states of America as a toddler and spent my grammar school years in Europe. Europe was predominantly wealthy as well as the Middle East, which was mostly economically depressed. I went to high school in the Bronx in an area that was mostly black. I currently own a business in Jamaica Estates, which is a cultural melting pot. I feel blessed that I have been exposed to these many races and creeds. I have never felt prejudice to anyone ever. However now that has changed. I will not be able to forgive or forget terrorism. All though it isn’t a specific race or religion, it is an ugly cult of people, who wish to bring attention to their beliefs by causing the deaths of innocent people. This is a very cowardly act. Americans are very strong people who will not respect any cause out of fear. Instead we are people who will mourn our lost, who will investigate the accountability of these terrible actions, and will carefully plan and execute serious actions against the guilty parties. As a man with children I fear the future that is coming. But fellow Americans, I know this. We as proud people must not act in haste or anger. We must not commit bias crimes. Spilling the blood of people out of hate for a color or creed only lowers us to their level. We must trust in our leaders and if necessary fight for our country and the beliefs it stands for. As a proud American I would rather die defending this country and eradicating terrorism, than live in this country fearing it. I leave with words I have read that were posted on the Internet. “As Americans we will weep. As Americans we will mourn, and as Americans we will rise in defense of all that we cherish. So I ask: what was it that you hoped to teach us with these terrible actions? It occurs to me that may be you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that is the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange: you don’t know my fellow Americans. You must not know what we are capable of. You don’t even realize what you just started. But you are about to learn!” Christopher Myers

Hi,
My name is Christopher Myers and I am the owner of Jamaica Tire and Auto. I would like to offer you on behalf of myself and all our staff the best wishes for the upcoming holidays. I would also like to share a little story with you. The story has a theme of perspective because everything that occurs in the world has multiple perspectives. While doing some paperwork at the customer service counter I overheard two women having a conversation about careers. One of these women made a loud comment in disgust about “I am not a lowly house wife”. I will be honest I could not hear the conversation that lead up to the comment and it really wasn’t my business anyway. Never the less the comment offended and infuriated me. I would like to share my perspective why. When I was younger and my career was not set in stone I was not necessarily approved of by all of my family. Not that now I am a successful business owner my soul is any different. My character which was forged in my upbringing would be the same whether I was a doctor, owner of a Goodyear dealership or a janitor. There was one person who comes to mind who had faith and approval for me no matter what I did. She was my grandmother who passed away March 9, 2002. This prolific woman who was a major influence in my upbringing was indeed a powerful force in my life, my whole family and also in my community. This “Lowly house wife” has a list of accomplishments that could fill this newspaper. But, I’m going to share only the highlights. First of all she had seven children ,two of which passed away and five who survived her. She has twelve grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren and even two great, great grandchildren. My mother Patricia who is one of the five who survived was born in 1948 (she’s going kill me) the reason and significance of this is that my grand mother was 44 when she had my mother. Today that would be considered a feat but since 54 years ago they did not have all the modern tests to screen for fetal defects and no sonograms to insure the baby were ok. They told her it could not be done she said “watch me” and she did it. Every aspect of her life was tempered with shear will power. In 1947 she formed the Whitestone community ambulance Corps. She was 24hr dispatcher for over 20 years. She also was their secretary a full time job in it self . This Volunteer service has saved thousands of lives. She remained full time secretary until the age of 77 (she was New York State’s oldest secretary) she remained on the board of directors till she died. The building on 150th street in Whitestone bears her name. She has been given presidential and senatorial awards for her long standing community service. She was known to council members and assembly men alike. She also was involved in the holy cross women guild. She was one of the people who got this guild together even before holy cross H.S. on Francis Lewis was built. She was inducted into their hall of fame in 1996 She was the first women to do so. She was still in that guild for many yeas after her son graduated. These were the public sides to Grace Herold . Let me tell you about her private side, “nana” as everybody who knew her called her was a women of strong faith. She believed that God is watching everything that you do. This meant to her that you should do it the best you could. Doing it with pride whether it being a wife, a mother, a baseball fan, a game show fan or just being a citizen or reading books or speaking correct English. She took great pride in everything she did. She even willed herself out of death as far as I’m concerned. She was very sick before the Christmas Holiday and she suffered a major heart attack the doctors gave her a zero chance of survival. However, she made it through several months in the hospital and rehab., to come back home and pass three days later. I believe it was her etiquette to not die at Christmas as not to ruin anyone’s holiday. Her will was so strong even died with pride. I attended the most crowded wake I had ever seen. This “lowly housewife” touched so many people. As I read at her funeral to a packed church where no seat was empty I realized that this “housewife” although not wealthy who had not accomplished any “specific career” was the richest women I have ever met” She was my hero and I aspire to be half the person she was. In my perspective a housewife and mother who is raising children is handling the worlds most important resource our children, and that is a career that I think is very prestigious
P.S. A little list of things that happened in her 98 year lifetime. The titanic sank the great depression, the roaring twenties, and prohibition, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. Refrigerators, Television, VCR’s, 8 tracks’, Cassette’s CD’s, DVD’s, Cable T.V., A man walked on the moon, air conditioning, Automatic transmissions. JFK was shot??? 18 American Presidents, calculators, computers, ATM’s, The Long Island Expressway, The Whitestone Bridge, The Throgsneck Bridge, The 59th Street Bridge, The Midtown Tunnel, Cell phones, Beepers, Martin Luther King’s Death, Elvis’ Death, the hostages in Iran, Zip lock bags, instant cake mix, Polaroid camera’s, satellite’s, lotto the rise and fall of the twin towers

I am Christopher Myers, owner of Jamaica Tire & Auto. My staff and I would like to wish all our customers and neighbors season greeting and a Happy and Healthy New Year. I would also like to share my Christmas miracle with you to remind you that miracles still do happen, you just have to look and really believe miracles. On Friday December 14, I received a panicked phone call that my 97 year old grandmother had fallen and broken her hip. I rushed to my mother’s, where my grandmother lives, in time to help load her into the ambulance. This ambulance was from the Whitestone Volunteer Community Corps, which she helped found and remained an active member of for over sixty years. This building bears her name, but that’s a separate story. She was afraid, but in good spirits. She was worried about missing Holidays, than her own injuries. I gave her kisses and told her not to worry, she asked me to pray for her. Arriving at the hospital, the doctors determined they would do surgery that would require putting a plate and screws into to secure her hip, which would be life threatening for anyone at 97 years old. We were all afraid but Nana, as she insists on being called, is tough. At this point I must interject that my Nana raised my brothers and I while my mother worked two jobs to support us as best as she could. My parents were divorced and my father had abandoned us. This woman raised us with an abundance of love which is beyond measure and she was always the one you could count on for a positive word or limitless hugs and kisses. She made less seem like more and she made having more seemed not so important in the true scale of things. I lived with my grandmother 25 of my 32 years. In addition to my self, Nana raised six children, many grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and raised by proxy many friends who rolled in and out of this house for over four generations, over sixty years. We were all nervous! The operation was a success and all was thought to be well, but unfortunately it did not work out that way. While recovering from her surgery she suffered a massive heart attack. They called me to bring my mother to the hospital. When we got there we expecting to hear the worst miraculously she was alive! It was not all good news her fluids were poor and the lack of oxygen had taken its toll. This normally sharp as a tack senior, barely recognized me or her daughter this was absolutely heart breaking. The doctors did not know what would happen. I returned to work and later that afternoon I got the gruesome call telling us to come say goodbye to our Nana. Driving to the hospital crying alone in my car I imagined what she would say to me. I knew she would pat my hand and say “Be strong everything happens in god’s good time”. But I wasn’t ready to let go or tell my children that Nana, who they played with everyday could not be at Christmas because she had gone to see Jesus. I was not ready so I prayed for strength and I selfishly asked god to let her live. I walked into her room and held the hand of a woman I admire and worship as she slept. I went home in mourning, hating this world for ruining my Christmas, doing the exact opposite of everything she taught me. Miraculously, she awoke up the next morning as if nothing happened wondering why we were so somber; she had the surgery not us. All of her wit and faculties were back and a great desire to come home and spend Christmas with the family. I got the best Christmas present ever, when my prayers were answered!!!
Please remember your real Christmas presents are all around you. You speak with them everyday, it’s our children, parents, grandparents, wives, husbands, brothers and sisters. Your best presents are around all year long. Take the time to tell them you love them because none us live forever.
Christopher Myers
