I am brand new to this sport, but extremely interested in learning, training, and competing. I am from central IL. Does anyone know of anyone in the IL or West IN area who trains?
I am a lightweight stringman competitor and powerlifter. 23, 173Lbs, 5'7".
so, how do people on this forum train for competitons, other than on tables. I know that is the BIG main part without a doubt. I hope to get on a table soon. But, in the weightroom, bands, grippers, etc?

Hi Brett,
There are several strongman and grip competitors on the board. Rick North would be a great guy to tell you which parts of your current training routine can best be applied to armwrestling.
The Training forum is a great place for you to begin. Just read through the threads and the vast majority of your questions will likely be addressed.
You are coming from a very good background. The biggest difference will probably be shifting your training to emphasize static holds. Moving big weights is good, but static locks are how you apply that power on the table. Tendon strength greatly trumps dynamic contraction.
There is a wealth of talented pullers in west central / southern Illinois from Nashville to St. Louis and down to Metropolis. Up North you have the Chicago pullers.
Jared Cook is floating around the middle somewhere.
Your best bet is to hit some events to meet pullers in your area.

Things are good, Brett. I'm slimming down and then I'm gonna get stronger. Big plans for 2012.
Where are you in IL these days?

Good to hear, what weight class are you going to be entering?
I am in Mattoon, IL. Central for sure. I e-mailed a guy in maryvile about training and have another's number who lives in nashville il. It's 2 to 2.5 hr drive, but hopefully I can get there in the near future.

There used to be some good guys around Effingham. Tony Picchioldi or Blaine Middleton should be able to put you in contact with someone fairly close. They are both here on the board. Send them a PM. If you can't find them let me know and I'll get you their info offline.

Effingham is only a 20 min drive for me! I hope they still train. I just e-mailed Blaine. I need to contact Tony.
